he's johnny damon

total trader

at least damon left for more money

Ray left to be Lebron and Wade's hired gunner

Lost total respect for Ray Allen today
exactly, damon actually had a reason. celtics are contenders just like the heat are. top 4 team last year.

Let me be clear, I do not like the Heat. I despise Pat Riley, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and really the whole city of Miami as a result of my dislike for the Heat.

However, I cannot bring myself to despise Ray Allen for his decision tonight. He has always been a class-act, and tonight does not change that. While it is true that his legacy in Boston has been tarnished by signing with the Heat, his legacy in general remains intact.

The difference in money was negligible between the extra year of security and the lack of a state tax in Florida.

How was the difference in money negligible?  We offered him double.

Quote
Further, this would mark the first time in history that a player would be judged for not chasing the money.

Sorry, but Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. are you talking about?  LeBron left money on the table, and certainly was judged for it.  Nash is going to the Lakers for less than the Raptors would have paid him, and people are certainly judging him.  Whoever said leaving money on the table exempts you from criticism?

Quote
As it stands, Ray is likely financially secure, but the extra year makes both deals comparable.

Only if you are assuming he will absolutely suck in the third year.  If he plays here for 2 years and $12 million, he still has the right to sign another contract after those 2 years, you know.  It's not like we offered him 2 years at $6 million each, followed by 1 year at zero dollars.  It was 2 years, plus whatever he could get the third year.

Quote
Lost in all of the anger of tonight is that Ray went to the team that gives him the best chance at winning.

No, I really don't think that is lost at all.  I think that is absolutely the point.

If he went to the Clippers, I wouldn't be so baffled.  Or Memphis.  Or, if the Heat had lost to OKC, and then he went to the Heat.  Or, if DWade was retiring.  But none of that happened.

Instead, he's just grabbing on to the coattails of the guys who already won the championship without him.  It actually makes no sense.

Quote
I wish Ray all the best going forward with his career and life, with one major caveat: I hope he never wins another title. Instead, I hope Boston eliminates Miami each of the next three years, not because Ray is there, but because I am a Celtics fan. Outside of not winning a title or ever beating the Celtics, I wish him the very best in the next chapter of his hall of fame career.

I wish him well also, but he's definitely burned his bridges.  He had a chance to have #20 hanging from the rafters some day, and that's gone.  And I think history will absolutely judge him for trying to ride LeBron's coattails.  If he could have gone to the Clippers or Grizzlies or anyone else, and been the guy to put them over the top, that would have been a great accomplishment.  Miami is a no-win situation.  They can win the title without him.  If they win, why would he get credit?  If they lose, he dragged them down.

And his very presence is going to force them to play a style which will not always suit them.  You can go three-guards against some teams, but they're going to feel compelled to do it too often.

For a guy who said he wanted to start and finish games, going to the team where he's clearly inferior to a guy who plays the same position from him is just dumb.  But obviously he didn't feel confident enough in his ability to go try to win a title with another team.

His half-hearted, mediocre performance in the Miami series now makes perfect sense. He could easily have been the difference that would have given us that series, but he was oddly only half there. Things that make you go "Hmmm".

No cheers from me ... not at this point, (maybe later).

How was the difference in money negligible?  We offered him double.

We offered him $12 million, they offered him $9 million. Throw in the income tax difference, and we're talking about a difference of a little more than $2 million. That's not exactly a lot in the NBA world.

Sorry, but **** are you talking about?  LeBron left money on the table, and certainly was judged for it.  Nash is going to the Lakers for less than the Raptors would have paid him, and people are certainly judging him.  Whoever said leaving money on the table exempts you from criticism?

It's not leaving the money on the table that is criticized. It's fans of other teams getting upset with guys teaming up. For a guy who is bound to be a role player, that's par for the course in the NBA.

He's 37 and coming off an ankle injury that greatly limited his success this past off-season. What's that saying about a bird in the hand? There's a reason players look for long term contracts.

No, I really don't think that is lost at all.  I think that is absolutely the point.

Why does it matter if they already won? Does the second title not count? Should we only care about Russell's first title? If Ray helps to make this Miami squad a repeat champion, it will help his legacy.

Ray's legacy in Boston is going to be harmed. How his legacy in the league will change will be determined by how he performs in Miami. If he sits on the bench for some titles, nobody will care about the extra rings. If he hits some huge threes for Miami in a Finals series, it will improve his legacy. How Boston fans feel about him for this is rather irrelevant.

And his very presence is going to force them to play a style which will not always suit them.  You can go three-guards against some teams, but they're going to feel compelled to do it too often.

Going with two guards along with Wade, Bosh and LeBron is an amazing strategy for Miami. There's not a team in the NBA that matches up with that lineup, because LeBron can adequately defend opposing 4s.

For a guy who said he wanted to start and finish games, going to the team where he's clearly inferior to a guy who plays the same position from him is just dumb.  But obviously he didn't feel confident enough in his ability to go try to win a title with another team.

Maybe Miami seemed like a good fit for him?

He aint getting any from me.

I understand that he needs to move on. But to go to Miami, there's really no reason or him to do that but to slap the organization inthe face. Let's see here okay...

Win another championship - yes we have it
More money - right here
Playing time - well, it's not like he'll also start there

This is clearly a slap in the face. This for the trade talks and the benching. He was a class act until
He got his name in the block and the benching.

Enjoy the dark side Ray, sayonara traitor.

I won't cheer Ray Allen any longer, regardless of what he has done in the past and here's why:

1. He chose the "enemy". This isn't sour grapes or something that will fade over time. As long as he is putting on a Heat jersey, he is a villain on the court. I still think he is a class act as a person, but in sports, when you join the enemy - you ARE the enemy. End of story, no debate. He earned the right to choose his path, and he chose the path to Miami and therefore should have to live with how we Boston fans perceive it.

2. He got his praise while he was wearing the green jersey. We don't owe him anything. Boston fans loved Ray Allen while he was here and let him know it every time he stepped on the court. I don't believe the loyalty of the fans should extend beyond the loyalty of the player.

This is right on the money.  Ray has made a baffling move that seems more geared towards hardware than integrity.  I'm sorry, but I thought Ray was better.  Now he just seems vain. No love lost from me.

Wow...way to keep it classy Celticsblog. I mean it's not like Ray didn't help us win Banner 17 or anything. Help us win countless ballgames. Sure I would've rather he gone to LAC but Ray didn't owe us anything. Hell we tried to trade him 2 years in a row. There were going to be less and more inconsistent minutes this next season and he had already begin to see fewer shots last year as it was. This team needed to get younger on the perimeter anyway. Love the RR/AB/JET trifecta on the perimeter better anyway. At this point, paying 6M for really nothing more than a 3-point specialist would've been a bad financial investment anyway. But I can't believe the venom in this group.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity...
