Also Crawford got a 4th year on his contract. 4yr/$25 million.

Yikes = too many years, bad contract

Who does Who think we should go after with the BAE if:
1) Ray signs
2) Ray doesn't sign

Assume in both scenarios that C's sign Bass and Wilcox.

I like DeShawn Stevenson for the minimum to replace Ray Allen. Most of the backcourt minutes are going to go to Rondo, Bradley and Terry anyway. Not a large need there.

A "3 and D" type. Someone who can defend and spread the court. Preferably someone with good size who can handle bigger SGs where necessary. It would also need to be someone comfortable in a smaller role who can handle fluctuating minutes and often limited playing time. I think Stevenson fits the bill for that.

If Jeff Green leaves, I like Grant Hill for the BAE.

If Jeff Green stays, I have no idea who I would pursue with the BAE. I expect most of my preferred targets to be available for the minimum. I'd probably just keep the BAE until next year.

nice work by the Clippers. Billups was huge for them last year, and then Crawford is the kind of scoring gun slinger they need on the bench.

I can't believe Billups is taking such a small deal. I would have thought he'd be worth at least the full MLE for 2 years.

He is coming off a pretty severe injury.  I'd assume that was a factor.

Most guys off of achilles injuries at his age don't come back at the same level or quickly.

Hmmm, Id much rather have Terry than Crawford at virtually the same contract.  Agree?
Definitely.  Big gap between Ray and Terry vs the rest.

Ray > Terry > Crawford > Mayo > Young

I'm not sure that Ray (36) is clearly better than Terry (34) at this point in their careers either.  Ray is the better shooter, better pure SG, and slightly better defender.  But Terry's ability to play PG, lesser signs of decline due to age over the past couple seasons, and ability to create his own offense which Ray hasn't been able to do I think brings Terry up to Ray's level when considering a multi-year contract.  Also, Ray is going to be entering the season coming off of surgery.

So do you think we are set at the 5 with KG, Melo and Wilcox (maybe Stiemsma)?  I wonder whether KG's stated interest in avoiding the 5 might have been in the discussion during contract talks.  Is there an availble 5 you think is worth the BAE?

I don't think there is anything to be done there.

Not sure there is anything else they can do there with their limited resources. Centers are so expensive. Not much available for the BAE. Pretty much the same quality as minimum contract guys.

I am comfortable enough with Garnett and Stiemsma. I don't know enough about Fab Melo (too many mixed scouting reports, hard to get a good read on him -- I haven't seen him myself) to rely on him during his rookie season. I'd consider him a 13th-15th man on the roster.

I would like to add one more center. Same issue I had last year, I want an additional center who offers a different type of defensive skill-set to Stiemsma. A large powerful center. Physical toughness. Brute force. That type of big man.

And same as last year, I like a Magloire or Dampier for that role. Both guys should be available for the minimum. No need to dip into the BAE.

Aaron Gray is another guy who gets mentioned. I'd be happy with him. More of an offensive orientated guy than Damp/Magloire but he also brings that bulk I am looking for off the bench. He'd probably require the BAE. I like the other two a little more because they are stronger defender/rebounders so I'd go in that direction but Gray would be a good choice also.

C - Garnett, Stiemsma, bulky center, Fab Melo

... maybe Ronny Turiaf. He doesn't seem to have much interest in him at the moment. He might slip into that BAE category. More of an alternative to Stiemsma than someone you'd bring in in addition to Stiemsma. More athletic and well rounded defensively but not as good a rebounder. Very poor rebounder.

I don't know, I like what Stiemsma showed in the latter stages of the regular season, I'd probably just stick with him instead of signing Ronny Turiaf.

... Nenad Krstic is another option if one of the free agents (Ray or Green) go elsewhere. More gifted offensively and he'd make a good trade asset. Wouldn't be able to sign that physical five if Krstic is brought back though. Five centers is too many.

That means Nick Young is gone
I wouldn't mind having him on the Celtics

I still wonder whether Portland might entertain thoughts of swapping Kurt Thomas for E'Twaun Moore. Blazers would be able to clear some more cap room after they cut Moore's non-guaranteed salary.

I like Thomas as an enforcer/3rd string/emergency center.

Never too high on trades on here but thats a great one. I could see Thomas even becoming the 2nd Center in the playoffs. Id even throw in our next years or future second.

Good points. I wasn't aware of how severe his injury was.
