Danny Ainge and Doc have made public comments about KG, Ray Allen and Jeff Green. He went out and used the MLE on Jason Terry. These have obviously been the priorities for the reconstruction of this Celtics team after the NBA Draft.

But we don't hear coming from the Celtics are rumors of their interested to bring back Brandon Bass, or if we have those rumors are scarce to find at best. Why is that? Well there is this from a Spurs fan site:

Quote
While it seems like the Spurs won't have the salary Bass is seeking, there is the possibility of completing a sign-and-trade for him, as reports state the Celtics will be looking to sign-and-trade with any team that signs Brass if he chooses not to return to Boston.

http://projectspurs.com/2012-articles/july/spurs-interested-in-brandon-bass.html

Not sure how reliable that is but brings up an interesting position. Are the Celtics more interested in signing and trading Bass away for and getting a possible starting PF or center that can rebound better? With the Jet on board, if Ray returns and with KG's and Pierce abilities to hit shots from mi range, is Bass's mid range game and mediocre rebounding just not needed? Could it be the C's are looking for a defensive upgrade from Bass that can rebound better and might have a better post game?

Seems something like that could be logical given its what Sullinger does and perhaps if its a vet, Sullinger could learn something from such a player. Perhaps the C's want to keep KG in his mid range game to remove some of the long term wear and tear off him and Bass' offensive is a bit too repetitive with the rest of the team's in that regard?

Perhaps Danny could loosen some teams grip on a better player with Bass, JJJ and a pick or two. Perhaps someone like Scola from Houston, Lee from Golden State, Splitter from San Antonio, or Thompson from Sacramento?

Maybe not but I really think its far from a given Bass returns and more likely he gets signed and traded.

I think Sullinger has made Bass expendable. Ainge kept bringing up Sullinger's mid range game and how it's underrated. So a sign and trade could be in the works.

Probably waiting to see if we need to use the Bass S&T for a shooting guard (if Ray leaves) or another big man, if Ray comes back.  Or maybe they just are unwilling to make offers to Bass until they see how much they have after the Green and Allen deals since we have to stay ender the luxury tax cap number.

I think you are right about some of what Bass brought being expendable.  You bring up Terry replacing some of his offense, but also Green who will probably get run at the 4.

I think rebounding is our next concern.  I do like the idea of Scola and Thompson quite a bit.  Both can rebound and be active, which should be a bigger concern than midrange shooting at this point IMO.

I think we should s&t bass w/ fillers for a solid starting C or use the money we would use on him for a C (maybe krstic, i like thompson but idk if we'd have the assets for him). w/ kg and sully at pf, Center is the top priority, assuming we resign green and hopefully ray. if we retain ray, steamer, green, MP, and some how come up with a solid center we're top 3 in the east barring an injury plagued season such as last year.

I was considering Sullinger as a starter when Boston first drafted him but now I think would be a bad idea.

Given his physical deficiencies and his so-so defense, it's likely he'll always be a poor defender in the NBA. But as a rookie? When most players struggle so much on the defensive end and with his limitations? I think he'll be too large a liability.

I'd like to keep Sullinger in that backup PF role for now. That Sean May type role.

I really am not sure how he will pan out defensively but I wouldn't assume he will be bad there.  He has all the tools BBD has and he was a good defender for us.

With that kind of build it's all about using your body to push guys out of their favorite positions and make it hard for them to make a move after.  He could certainly do that.

Lets hope he learns to take charges like BBD did and he could be a capapble defender.

I think Danny is waiting to see what the market is for Bass.

Also, the Ray situation will determine how much we have left to pay for Bass and others.

I think Bass would like to return all else equal, so I think even if he gets another offer he will give the C's time to respond. At which point, the sign and trade scenarios come into focus.

I imagine the Celtics have made him their offer and he is looking around to see what his other options are.

And we don't here much is because he is a role player.  The media focuses on the stars.

This sounds about right.  If Ray's gone, we'd have more money for a one year overpay too.

Once the Cs decided to retain KG, their payroll strategy is to spend up to  the luxtax threshold. They're at around $52m right now with KG, JT, the rookies and cap holds, so they need to work every one of their salary slots to get the players they need to compete.

That means not letting Allen or Bass walk without getting something back.  They're going to use around $8m of that room on Jeff Green, and have offered $6m of it to RA.  That leaves around $5m for Bass, probably not enough to get it done.

We have heard this.  Everytime I have heard/seen quotes from Danny about wanting to bring back Ray, he usually says the same thing about Bass.  It just doesn't make the headlines.

If I'm not mistaken, they can spend up to about $4 mil above the tax and still use the MLE they've promised to Terry.  This leaves about $8mil for Bass, which should get it done.
