I really hope Mayo isn't our big free agent splash this year.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

M.H. on the big show just said that a deal was agreed to to send Ray to Memphis for Mayo at the trade deadline but Mayo stepped in and said he did not want to play here.

But how do you round out the roster?

By using Bird Rights to bring back players, you still have the MLE (because you're over the cap) to add help.

If you renounce rights to free up cap room, once you use $10-$12 million (about half the cap room) to resign Garnett, you only have $12-$15 million and veteran minimums to fill the remaining half-dozen slots around KG, Pierce, Rondo, Bradley, and the incoming and last year's rookies.

Agreed this will be a challenge.  But this didn't stop Miami from signing Lebron and Bosh because they were worried about whether M. Miller would sign.  OKC never signed a big name FA but they used cap space to their advantage for years by taking bad short-term contracts on along with first-round picks.  Cap Space is very valuable!  More valuable than veteran role players like Bass and Pietrus.

DA's gone on record to saying as much and so has Wyc....this is the first time DA's ever had the opportunity to operate under the cap and he intends to use it.
He's not going to use cap space  DOn't give your hopes up.

The interview I heard last week didn't sound like he was interested in using cap space.  They want to bring back the team.  The only way they decide to use cap space is if KG retires.  Otherwise, it's pointless.

That's what the story has been... that Ray even thought he was traded at one point, but it fell through because Mayo didn't want to play here.

All the issues he's had in Memphis and you don't want to play here?  With Rondo?

Some players confuse me.

Mayo has been a bit of a whackjob even prior to entering the NBA.  I remember an epic Simmons article pre-draft about why teams should be raving about Kevin Love and NOT Mayo.

There was an article about how he selected USC mainly because it was a crappy school and he could write his own legacy there.  His "people" just walked into the Coach's office and said, "how would you like to have OJ Mayo come here?"... Very weird.  Not surprised he wouldn't want to play in Boston.  He'd probably rather go play for the Bobcats.

Hadn't really heard some of this stuff... I would be so interested to hear why Ainge loves Mayo so much given all this information.

Ok I spent a few minutes googling, but got bored.  Here's the gist of the article I read (on ESPN) years ago.  TIm Floyd (former Bulls coach) was in charge of USC.  USC is kinda a crappy program.  OJ Mayo was basically the top recruit in the nation.  Floyd wasn't even trying to recruit Mayo... it wouldn't have been worth his time.  Then one day he gets a cryptic phone call from one of Mayo's people... a meeting is set... (Mayo isn't even at the meeting) and they are like, "how would you like to have the top player in the nation come to your school?"... Basically mayo was picking USC, because it was a crap school that he could be a god at.

Later there was a huge scandal about Floyd paying Mayo and his handlers.

Mayo doesn't sound like the kind of guy who would be that enamored with the Celtics legacy.  He's a me-first guy who wants to go to a crap team like the Bobcats where he can be the star.

We're spending way too much time talking about TOny Allen's backup, I think.

Yeah I'd rather he go for Crawford or Terry if he must bring a combo gunner to the team.

Hungry vets, very much agreed given this stuff about Mayo being such a premadonna.

I think we need that kind of gunner off the bench.

The biggest reason he chose USC (besides all the under the table $$$) was so he could market himself. His game never translated to all the hype.

The question to ask with Mayo is...how much better is he than Shannon Brown?

Mike
u serious? rofl OJ Mayo came in da league averaging 19ppg Shannon Brown is a journey man wit a athleticism nd a streaky jumper as far as offense i would much rather have Mayo
