  • KG IS THE KING
Comcast Sports Net Northwest's Blazers insider Chris Haynes (A. Sherrod Blakeley's role for CSNNE) writes that the Celtics are interested in trading for Jamal Crawford.

Here's the tricky part though, Crawford has one more year on his deal and can opt out before July 1st. If traded and then opting out, he will retain his Bird Rights. However, he will then become an unrestricted free agent. So correct me if I am wrong, does that mean if the C's trade for Crawford, it could very well mean that the C's will end up trading pieces away for someone who might not even stay here next season?

Anyhow, basketball wise this will be a good move. Crawford is a good scorer who can give the second unit a definite boost, something we sorely lacked this past year.

Thoughts?

Essentially you'd be trading for their bird rights (a chance to sign Crawford without having to use the MLE or renounce free agents).

They also might be able to convince Crawford to opt in.

I wonder if it would be possible to trade Bass for Crawford before either officially opts out.  Throw in one of our many 2nd rounders for Portland's trouble (they don't need Bass' bird rights with all that cap room)
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

The only way the Celtics can trade for Crawford is if he elects to opt into the final year of his contract.

If he does opt in before draft night, then the only way the Celtics could acquire him on draft night would be for a package of Bradley, JJJ, and Moore, or something larger involving Pierce or Rondo.

I don't like Crawford poor shooting percentages last year, hero ball chucker, clashed with ex coaches, doesn't play defense

He'll be in the best place you can possibly ask for for someone who doesn't really play defense. Doc's system is built around trust and rotations. His basketball IQ is high enough for him to pick them up. The real question is, will he?

On another note, I can't think of anyone else that the C's can target without compromising too much cap space. Lou Williams is an interesting option but there is no way he'll agree to come to Boston if it was only a 1 year deal.

Crawford decides to opt out of his contract, making himself a free agent:

This means Crawford cannot be traded on draft night.
