Sources confirm to Ken Berger that the first round pick is lottery protected in 2013, top-eight in 2014, top-one in 2015 and unprotected in 2016.

I don't think the Pistons make the playoffs next year. Good chance they fail to do the following season too. I think Charlotte has a good chance of nabbing a late lottery (9-14) pick in 2014.

If they get a late lotto pick for one year of Ben Gordon's contract (especially since they wouldn't have been able to convince any top FAs to go there anyway), this trade will be a home run for Charlotte.
Wow, the gamble alone on the potential for a lottery draft pick in '14 or '15 makes this trade a home run already in my eyes.  Detroit must have been absolutely desperate to get rid of him?

...the more I think about this, the more I like this trade for Charlotte. They get the better player and the future first.  Gordon is also a more marketable player (both to fans and to potential FAs).  I like the move.
I agree with all 3 of those points.

I love this trade for Charlotte (meaning I don't see how they could have possibly gotten any better value in a trade straight up for Maggette).  One more year of Ben Gordon in '14?  Who cares, lets be honest, that cap space in '13 wasn't going to be a franchise-changer for them.  They are far further than 1 year from contending.

I am very confused about this logjam at SF for Detroit now though.
agree with everything here.  giving up that first, on those terms, was just nuts.

PS: I don't like the timing on this for Charlotte, though. I think this moves tips their hand against selecting Beal at #2.

They could have leveraged the uncertainty of taking Beal at #2 to get Cleveland to pay to move up, and gain another asset along with the #4 in exchange for the #2.

Really like this move for Charlotte, I think that pick could become valuable - depends on what Detroit does this year in the draft. As far as Beal, I don't know how much it tips their hand. I mean, they aren't going for positional needs here. I'm sure MJ realizes that they'll be squarely in the top 5 again next year. Even if half the roster is guards, or point-guard sized shooting guards, he needs to take the best player available.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

Non-issue for me. They already have leverage with Washington at #3.

Cleveland still has to trade up to get to Bradley Beal before the Wizards do.

Ah, good point. With their roster, Washington definitely doesn't need another SF or big.

Michael Jordan is the Elgin Baylor of executives.  Great player, horrible in the front office/ownership box.

I disagree, the more I think about this, the more I like this trade for Charlotte. They get the better player and the future first.  Gordon is also a more marketable player (both to fans and to potential FAs).  I like the move.

Yeah how is this not an incredible steal by charlotte? I dont get why people are putting this one down. They get Gordon and a future first....for...Maggette. Yes that Corey Maggette. I take that deal 11 times out of 10. Gordon is a better player by far plus they get a first. What a bonehead move by detroit.

A funny trade.  You give up the best player in the trade and a 1st... and the worst contract  ;D.

Better to get out of it at some point.  Now DET has to get rid of Charlie V.

It's not a bonehead move by Detroit.  They had far too much money tied up in Gordon so they are paying a premium to be rid of him.  It's unfortunate and is steep, but not boneheaded.  It does suckm they are trying to rebuild and losing a 1st is not a good way to go about it.  There is a method to the madness.

I do think the Bobcats are getting the best of this though.  I believe Gordon only has one more year?  It's not like they have other money tied up.

I wonder are they going to try to start Knight and Stuckey now?  This might be part of the intent of this trade.

What's Detroit doing with this freed up Ben Gordon money is the question.

Is that use of cap space/salary relief going to be better than a potential late lottery pick?

Looks like a player option (for $13.2M) in the following season...  so it's basically two years, $26M.  Charlotte's been needing to add salary, though, right?  They had hardly anything committed to 2013-2014; if you HAVE to add salary to meet the minimums, Gordon's not the worst player to overpay.  Not like Dwight Howard is going to sign in Charlotte.

Gordon's a decent player, but that Detroit signing was one of the dumbest I've seen - and it was immediately clear the moment it occured.  Gordon's a perfect 6th man, but they paid him like an All Star.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Steal for the Bobcats - They get a solid player with a tradable contract and a 1st round pick.

Joe Dumars should be fired. He is the worst GM in the NBA in my opinion. Not only did he gut a contending team to sign Gordon, he now had to give a up a 1st rounder to get rid of him? Just terrible. terrible. terrible.
