Gripe and moan as we might, it is nice to have the C's run by a management team that is willing to pay money to field a winning team.

And isn't likely to give a player like that a deal like Gordon got.

Don't understand at all, last thing they need is more guards. Guess MJ really wanted that pick
*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Well, I would like to think so, but let's not forget Mark Blount just yet....
:)

(yes, I know Gordon got about twice as much, but Gordon is at least twice as good as Blount).

Solid move for the Pistons saving money and clearing some cap. Lateral move for Charlotte. They lose caps space next year (nobody wants to go to charlotte, so no biggy). Atleast, they gain a draft pick down the line.

Dumars just bought himself another year of running the Pistons with that move. Saving lots of cash which managament definitely wasn't happy giving to ben gordon.. geeze the dude isn't worth a mid level let alone 12+ a year. And maggette is an expiring deal they can trade at the deadline this coming year. Jordan is an idiot except for the fact that he wont get anyone to go to Charlotte for at least a few years in free agency anyways.

With Ben Gordan, Gerald Henderson, D.J. Augustin, and Kemba Walker in the backcourt, looks like Thomas Robinson will be the #2 pick instead of Beal
so they need to make room in backcourt
what will it take to get gerald henderson part 2?  He'd fill ray's shoes and is young.  Bass sign an trade and a draft pick?

There is one clear winner in this trade, and it is Ben Gordon.
He's just become the face of the Bobcats' franchise, and will put up about 20 points a night. Should lead to another good payday for him in a couple years.

Its a win win for both, if Gordon is in the right situation he could potentially rebuild his value and would probably become at worst the #2 scoring option for a young Bobcats team. Also they get a future 1st rounder for whenever the Pistons don't suck.

On the flip side for the Pistons, they get the expiring contract of Maggette and now can amnesty Charlie V with no issues.

Win for both sides

Polk said there are similar deals the Bobcats could have made since Jordan bought the team, but didn’t have the cap room to execute. He specifically noted an opportunity with the Chicago Bulls.

In the summer of 2010 – the great LeBron James free-agent class – the Bulls were offering a first-round pick to any team willing to absorb guard Kirk Hinrich’s remaining contract. The Bobcats wanted both that pick and what Hinrich could still contribute.

“Hinrich was still a hell of a player at the time. We were dying,” Polk recalled. “We wanted a guy like Hinrich because we weren’t re-signing Raymond Felton, and we couldn’t do it because we had no flexibility.”

Instead, the Washington Wizards made the deal with Chicago.

“The Wizards ended up with the 17th pick, who ended up being (French big man) Kevin Seraphin,” Polk described. “ He had a heck of a second half of the season when they got rid of JaVale McGee.

Eerily similar trade to that Hinrich deal. The article was from last weekend.

Sources confirm to Ken Berger that the first round pick is lottery protected in 2013, top-eight in 2014, top-one in 2015 and unprotected in 2016.

I don't think the Pistons make the playoffs next year. Good chance they fail to do the following season too. I think Charlotte has a good chance of nabbing a late lottery (9-14) pick in 2014.

If they get a late lotto pick for one year of Ben Gordon's contract (especially since they wouldn't have been able to convince any top FAs to go there anyway), this trade will be a home run for Charlotte.

Wow, the gamble alone on the potential for a lottery draft pick in '14 or '15 makes this trade a home run already in my eyes.  Detroit must have been absolutely desperate to get rid of him?

...the more I think about this, the more I like this trade for Charlotte. They get the better player and the future first.  Gordon is also a more marketable player (both to fans and to potential FAs).  I like the move.
I agree with all 3 of those points.

I love this trade for Charlotte (meaning I don't see how they could have possibly gotten any better value in a trade straight up for Maggette).  One more year of Ben Gordon in '14?  Who cares, lets be honest, that cap space in '13 wasn't going to be a franchise-changer for them.  They are far further than 1 year from contending.

I am very confused about this logjam at SF for Detroit now though.

First blush, I think I like the deal more for Charlotte than for Detroit.

Charlotte is in sore need of shooting/scoring, and veteran players. Although overpaid, Gordon fits that bill, plus the Cats get what could turn out to be a very nice pick in the near future.

Detroit clears minutes for Brandon Knight, who now takes the reins at PG now that Rodney Stuckey slides to full-time SG, and saves a little money. Perhaps they will amnesty Charlie Villanueva next, and really clear the decks.

Can Corey Maggette still play the 2, or is he strictly a SF these days? I think Detroit needs a follow up move. Maggette's expiring deal could help address the Pistons' need for a legit frontcourt mate for Greg Monroe.
