but he wants to play in Brooklyn with Deron Williams.  If Williams' isn't in Brooklyn then the draw of playing there is much less.

Brooklyn will have both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard this coming season, or neither.

There's no way Brooklyn can put together a trade package for Howard on draft night, but they could conceivably next month.

I would love to see Dwight Howard land in Houston.

Daryl Morey has shown a keen eye for quality supporting cast members and I think he'd do a great job of surrounding Dwight with quality teammates. Turn Houston into a genuine title-contender with or without a second All-Star alongside Dwight Howard.

I would also love to see what Kevin McHale can do with Dwight Howard in the post.

You folks who are saying that two top 10 picks isn't enough for Howard and that the Magic have "already received better offers" are missing a key detail.  Dwight Howard has one year remaining on his contract and supposedly only wants to go to Brooklyn.  Presumably, he and his agent will tell any team that tries to trades for him that they refuse to sign an extension. Sure, they may be bluffing, but ANY team that trades for him (excluding Brooklyn) will be basically "renting" Dwight for a single season.  It's a definite gamble.  Houston (according to this rumor concept) is one of the few teams who is willing to trade for Dwight without an assurance on an extension.

I've asked this question before.   What would you, as a Celtic fan, be willing to give up for Dwight knowing there's a high probability he'll bail on you for Brooklyn in a year?  Would you just offer a sign-and-traded Ray Allen?  Would you dare offer them Pierce?  Would you offer them Rondo and two first rounders?  Probably not.  If you had two top 10 picks, would you give them up for a single season of Dwight and the small chance of calling his bluff and getting him to extend?... guess it depends what else you have surrounding him and how close you are to competing this year.  Like, If I was nuts, I'd trade Rondo for Dwight, throw our cap space at Deron Williams and cross my fingers that the situation worked itself out.

When did Howard ever say that he'll only go to Brooklyn? I've seen them on his list of preferred destinations, but not as the only choice.
When did he say he had a list of preferred destinations?  There was some speculation prior to the deadline that he'd also consider playing in Dallas or LA, but supposedly they threatened to trade him to the Lakers at the deadline and he freaked out and opted in for a final year.  He had no interest in playing there (according to reports). Everything I've been reading for months suggest he desperately wants to play in Brooklyn.

From Adrian Wojnarowski last week:

Quote
Howard is signed through the 2012-13 season, but another fallout with management has left him wanting a trade soon. Howard will push for a trade to the Brooklyn Nets before the June 28 NBA draft to clear the way for Nets free agent Deron Williams to re-sign with the Nets and partner in the new Brooklyn arena next season.

Could be wrong.  But if he wants to play in Brooklyn... he'll probably end up in Brooklyn.  That is, unless some team like Houston takes a gamble on renting him without assurance of an extension.

First of all, that quote is no more or less reliable than the speculation that he had a short list. Secondly, even if you believe what you posted, it doesn't say he wants to be in Brooklyn, it says he wants to be in Brooklyn if they re-sign Williams. If Deron goes to the Mavs as a FA I doubt that Howard will be in a rush to sign with the Nets.

A source with knowledge of Howard’s thinking said Monday that there was “not a chance” he would be convinced to re-sign with Houston if traded there. Howard would leave during the summer of 2013 to sign elsewhere.

Again... it's going to be hard for a team to give up considerable assets when his people are saying he will not extend.  You feel me on this?  He wants to play in Brooklyn (yes... with deron, obviously) and they will try to manipulate their way there.

Dwight Howard will sign an extension with Houston.

One shouldn't take a player's initial reaction too seriously.

Put him there and let him see what it is about and he'll sign a contract extension. Houston is a well run team and organization and will give Dwight Howard a chance to play for a Championship contender.

I dont see how they will be a contender when they give up lowry+ more + 4 picks for howard. Howard is a super star, but you have to surround him with decent players

They won't do stupid stuff like trading off Turkeygloo only to get him back. Or grabbing mediocre garbage. Or sign a bunch has-beens/ mediocre players to huge deals.

McHale will also be a great influence.

Because they have boat loads of cap space on the horizon which will allow Houston to retool around Howard easily enough. They'll be able to replenish their talent base quickly and effectively.

That's why the high cost (to their current talent base) isn't too large an issue. It's not like they are going to be stuck with no method for further improvements to the team. That cap flexibility is key. That gives them their future. Allows them to build around Dwight.

I wouldn't say "will" neccessarily (we are talking Dwight Howard here, we have seen how he really is in the last couple years) but yes you can't take these rumors that seriously.  KG didn't want to come to Boston.

After Orlando I'd have to imagine any organization would feel like a big improvement from the management level.

Say Houston trades for Dwight and makes it known that they won't trade him mid-season. What does Deon do? Re-sign with the Nets and hope Howard ends up there somehow? He probably goes to Dallas. What does Howard do then? Go to the talentless Nets? He wants to get traded to the Nets *right now* so he can team up with Deron. If that doesn't happen, it's back to the drawing board for him.

I'm a Rockets fan and I personally don't think it will happen.
As hard as Daryl is trying, even if we actually do trade for Dwight, he won't sign an extension and will bolt to wherever Dwill is.
Celtics fan in Houston.

I still see Williams and Howard ending up in Dallas.
