Paul Pierce is a pretty good defender but he can't cover the best wings by himself, he needs help if the C's are to get by Miami next year.

Brandon Bass showed flashes of good defense against LeBron but the matchup is not ideal.

Loved having Ray for the these past 5 years, and he helped win #17 but he's not a standout defender.

The off-season should focus of keeping the defense of he best in the league.  Assuming KG comes back, we still have a core of outstanding defenders:
KG
Paul Pierce
Rajon Rondo
Avery Bradley

I'd like to seeing M Pietrus, give the QO to Stiemsma, and bring back Seam Williams who is a hustler who can black shots too.

Sign Marcus Camby who can defend the pair and rebound.   Draft Royce White.  Resign Dooling.

Rondo / Moore / Dooling
Bradley / Pietrus
Pierce / White
KG / JJJ
Camby / Stiemsma / Williams

I thought, as the 2010 series went on, Green started doing a decent job covering LeBron.

Jeff Taylor should be on yours and hopefully danny's shortlist of draftess then.

" Has high-level potential on the defensive end, and his defense could be where his most value as a prospect lies … Is versatile on this end, and defended everything except C when at Vandy…Is very fundamentally sound and moves his feet very well … Has the size to defend SG’s and a lot of the bigger SF’s in time … Was arguably the best defending wing in the SEC last season, even though Kentucky’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist got most of the pub … Always contests shots … Is great at knowing when to gamble for passing lane steals and when to just play solid defense against his man …

Royce White wasn't known for defense in college one scouting report says this:

Defense liability, shows little effort, instincts or know-how on that end, routinely gets beat on the perimeter, lacks lateral quickness, doesn’t rotate well or guard the pick and roll, out of position a lot

Absolutely agree with the OP.

I think a stud rebounder should be our second choice, after we get a great wing or post defender. Defense and rebounding still win championships, right?

Yes. We need rebounding then.

We have defenders.  KG is a huge part of it, but we had the best defensive team in the NBA the second half of the season.

A Rondo-Bradley backcourt for 82 games is going to be a nightmare for the teams we play.

Pierce is still a capable defender, just not against Lebron.

We need guys down low who can rebound.  We need guys up top who can shoot.  Those are the holes in our team right now.  The last thing I am worried about is becoming a soft defensive team, especially if KG comes back.

is getting JG back next year really that set in stone? I'm sure he feels partially committed to us since we gave him a sweet christmas present but still, he could go anywhere.

Let's not bank on him please.

Who said anything about it being set in stone that he'd be back?

The majority are taking it for granted that he'll come back. I mean I guess it's likely but I dont want to depend on it.

We need guys down low who can rebound.  We need guys up top who can shoot.  Those are the holes in our team right now.  The last thing I am worried about is becoming a soft defensive team, especially if KG comes back.

The Celtics defense isn't something so primitive as "stay with your man".  Sometimes, the defense is only as good as the weakest link.  Players who don't know the responsibilities lead to easy baskets by guys who are being guarded properly by the team's best defenders.  A lot of the Celtics defense involves following your role and not freelancing in an attempt to compensate for someone else's bad defense.

You don't have to acquire guys who are strong man-to-man defenders, but you need players who are intelligent enough and work hard on defense.  I think it would be a mistake to bring in a player with a reputation for matador defense, which is why I think it would be a mistake to go after a guy like Al Jefferson.  Bringing in someone who doesn't fit into the team system in an attempt to improve scoring and rebounding could lead to team chemistry problems.

I'd be surprised if the Celts wanted him back and he left, unless he signs a deal before KG makes his decision.

Just my opinion, but I wouldnt be surprised to see him back in Celtic green on a low dollar, short term contract. I think he has to both prove he is basketball healthy again and prove he was a significant part of this team.

I would like to believe he was and still can be a difference maker for us. If he comes back, I wonder if he makes a summer league appearance to help get basketball timing and conditioning back?

Hard to know how good his conditioning will be for the upcoming year.
