Have a feeling Josh Smith

If he comes here I see it happening in July or August. Andy Kats mentioned that the Celtics are unlikely to make two picks to bring in two rookies. Maybe they deal one of their picks for a future pick then move that pick (along with other picks) later in the offseason to land Smith.

Personally, I love the idea of moving one of the picks for a future pick.

Not sure yet on the Josh Smith ideas (depends on a lot of other things).

I hope your feeling is right. because this has been my dream for a couple years.

It is certainly not my dream, but adding Josh Smith to a team with Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, (possibly) KG, and (possibly) Jeff Green would instantly make us contenders for the Eastern Conference again next year, and in my opinion we could be one of the best defensive teams of the past 2 decades.

Adding Smith would help even more if KG decides not to come back, as it now gives us a starting PF for the next couple years (I am assuming Danny would only do this trade if he could get Smith to agree to an extension.)  KG and Ray's salaries then come off the books in full, half of that goes to extending Smith, an the other piece is save for the 2013/2014 Free Agent class.

I don't consider J. Smith at $13M next year too expensive.  Maybe he is worth more like $10M in real terms, but that's nothing like a Joe Johnson contract ($19.7M next year!!!).

Either way you view Smith, we would have to get a 3rd team involved somehow.  The one unfortunate thing about having so much cap flexibility is that you don't have many tradeable contracts.  We could either move Rondo or Pierce (or both) to absorb a salary like Josh Smith, but there is not way either of those 2 are being traded for him.

I think Smith is an intriguing player, but I also think he needs to find the right fit.  Which is why I love that he has only 1 year left on his deal.  He could come in, and you can see first hand what wins out with the Rondo/Smith combination...the awesome athleticism and fast break potential, or the lack of shooting gumming up the halfcourt offense.

I could see the relative lack of shooting being an issue.  You just have to make sure your wing players are good shooters.  Luckily we have should have that for at least next season (Pierce/possibly Ray).

I would love to see Rondo running the break with Bradley and Smith.  They would run teams off the court.

I agree that we must retain our cap flexibility for next year's monster free agent class. However, I'm fine with giving Green $4-8 MM on a one year deal to do so. Ideally we could fill out our roster with one year deals, so that when KG and Pierce retire after next season we can go hard after Dwight. The problem is I'm not sure what free agents we can bring in while only dangling one year deals and a shot to knock off the hated Heat.

Probably not, although when Danny traded Perk, the C's were still PP's team. The team's now Rondo's... or pretty close going forward.

Reagarding what Atlanta might be able to get in a trade of Smith, I'm of the opinion it's less than what most people think.

Atlanta is going to be forced to have to trade Smith soon, or risk losing him for nothing.  Smith has made it known he wants out of Atlanta.  Also, Smith hasn't exactly made any preference known as to where he would like to play.  Teams will be reluctant to offer much in a trade for a one year rental they can't be sure will re-sign.

On the other hand, Smith is known to be good friends with our best player (Rondo), and has on more than one occasion had very good things to say about the Celtics franchise and it's fan base.  I would have to think this would give the Celtics a certain level of comfort with making a deal for Smith other teams might not have.

I think it every time his name comes up. I know he is "talented" and is a "friend of Rondo" and maybe he'd be a great player for the Celtics, but I doubt that and just don't like him.
