Also, add a fourth ref, so one is stationed at each end of the court and two run up and down the sidelines, rotating by quarter.

I'd love to see the NBA take this up.

I love that they're going to tackle this in some way shape or form.  I hope it's better than the last time Stern said he'd do something about flopping.  All he did was hire a ex-military guy to lead a flopping committee that promised to deal with the issue.  Nevermind the guy's credentials for reviewing NBA games, it showed how tough and committed the NBA was to get rid of flopping.  I mean, ex-military, Stern wasn't messing around, he was going at this hard!  Yep, so hard that nothing ever came out of that from the league at all.  It was as if the whole thing was a PR stunt.  Talk about sham initiatives, you couldn't get any shammier.

It would have been so great if the NBA had the ex-military guy do videos like Brendan Shananan did as the NHL discipline czar.  If he had the gift of chewing out floppers like a Hollywood version of a drill sergeant, it would've been gold.

There was one good thing that came out of the first anti-flopping initiative though and it was a big reduction in the flops by Anderson Varejao.  Varejao came out at the time admitting that he flopped and that he couldn't believe he got away with it so much but since the NBA was going to crack down on it, he'd stop.  Even though they did no such thing, he actually toned it down.  I can't say he stopped completely because I didn't watch all his games but there was a big change.  To this day I don't understand why he changed his ways while flopping intensified but I respect him more for it.

do like the Australian Rules football league does. Review "flops" after the game and punish them.

Exactly, it's not like it's a difficult thing to do with all the cameras and and all the angles we get to see the plays from. The league already reviews tons of other stuff (at least, I hope they do)  ;D

When Stern retires, I'm going to party like it's 1999. Who's coming to the party?!

Only if it's something done while reviewing the game.  If you have today's refs try to call flops during the game on top of everything else the game will get even more chopped up than it already is....

The current refereeing style is partly responsible for this flopping issue btw.  Players are taking advantage of whistle happy refs.  But yes, even if the refs were more disciplined with their whistles there could still be a process top punish the occasional, brilliant flop, when reviewing plays after the game...

Agree that players reacting exaggeratedly to a an actual foul should not be penalized....too much to tackle and a slippery slope.  Just fine the non-foul flops.

Agree also that players would likely be embarrassed by their flop fines.

My advice to the committee would be to eliminate the defensive three second rule.

The other one is to really clean up the block/charge rules.

I wouldn't mind some penalties for flopping, either.

tp

I totally agree, most of the inconsistent whistles were because of these two rules.

Offensive drives into the lane are REWARDED way too often ....thanks MJ  ::)and now his cronies LBJ and Wade.

Playing defense is hard work and should be rewarded quicker than letting guys put their head down and FULLBACK their way to the rim. This SHOULD be a charge EVERYTIME, somebody is creamed /ran over / ect  when in the paint. Running the lane should require a SKILLED move such as Rose, Rondo, Westbrook makes...not bulldozing the players over and the foul going on the defensive player more times than not. And thus Wade depends on the refs giving him the call all the time or getting fouls. MJ started all this stupid bastetball and Stern supported it with refs deferring the calls always to Mikey  It seems 90% of the calls always go  the offensive players way. This SUCKS and without protecting the play of defensive players , the game becomes a NO DEFENSE minded game of bulldozer drives  and boring.  Just street thug basketball ....suited for James and Wade.

Meh, I don't think adding the third official added anything positive to the game. Not sure why a fourth one would. It would just add more ticky tack calls and stoppages to the game.

I'd rather go back to two than add a fourth.

here is a simple solution.....

dont reward flops with calls.  if the refs dont reward the flop, the players will eventually stop flopping, as it takes them out of plays.  i understand a ref can occasionally be deceived, but the vast majority of the time, the reward the flop.

This.  The league has created the flopping, by essentially requiring it to get a charge call, and rewarding it probably 90% of the time on any other call.

The first rule I would love to see changed is to make the refs start calling charges, even when the defender stands his ground.  If he has the spot, let him stand there without flopping, and still get the call, and things will change quickly.

The football league in my country suspends players on review if they flop...it's a good idea because then the fans hear about the suspension and get on the player's back for it, pressuring them to play the game the right way next time.

As simple as it seems, I agree with another poster that if the refs simply stop calling it so much, the players will realize the detriment it's causing their teams and stop.  In order for this to happen, I think the block/charge does need to be clarified.  Sliding into a position as a player is already in the air should not merit a charge.  I think far less blocking fouls should be called as well.

I'm fine with retroactive fines for obvious cases of flopping too.

I agree.

If that doesn't work then each player *guilty* of flopping should have to watch 100 hours of game film featuring the best Tony Parker, "I didn't get the flop call" facial expressions.

That should take care of things.
