With the Celtics reportedly looking to move up in the draft and NO willing to deal the 10th pick if the other team takes back money (Okafor), I've heard fellow Celtics fans jumping on this idea. But how is that possible? We'd have to match Okafors contract and only Pierce does that as cap space isn't there until after the draft!

Someone tried to tell me you can do it but hold off on making it official? Which just sounds ridiculous but what a loop hole if true!

Yeah. I wanted to know if it was possible to maybe trade an expiring contract (like Ray Allen's) on Draft night? Is he a free-agent already?

I think you've answered your own question as to how that's possible.

You don't have to match salaries as long as you're under cap and will not go over after you acquired the salary. If Okafor could land us No. 10, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Pls, do it Danny! Pls.
1.We will take Okafor.2 yrs.13.5M+14M.
2.Pick N10 is ours!
-take Leonard as a true C.
-or move higher in draft with this pick + ours
3.Winter deadline trade Okafor+filler for Smoove!
ATL will be happy to move Horford his natural PF position.
4.SNT Bass+filler for Tyreke Evans.
Bass is perfect to play with Cousins.Just perfect for Mento!
---
Bradley got real and early probs with his shoulders. We need Evans!

6.Sign Jamal Crawford as FA.
---
We might have our roster after Smoove trade:
Rondo
Evans
Bradley
Crawford
Pierce
Green
Smoove
Leonard
Stiemsma
KG

+ may be 1 pick 21 or 22
---
This is HELL OF A TEAM!

Not on draft night no.

and why would the kings trade Evans for Bass and a pick?

'Cos they are shopping him and Danny got great relations with Mento office.I don't think someone will offer more to Kings than Bass and 1st round pick.Mento need PF.Bass fits perfectly with DeMarcus style of game. And with their fifth pick they will close their needs (SF or PG).

IF and only IF we can flip Okafor to a 3rd team i'm more than happy to do this deal, a lottery pick just like that, why would we say no ?

Teams under the cap that might actually want Okafor:

Nets, struck out on Howard, Nene, Chandler and now DWill, they might take on his contract, give them the 2nd round pick they gave us in the Marshon Brooks trade plus cash and Okafor.

Our two picks for #10.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I would be very happy with Okafor. If we could get him or Ariza along with the number 10 without giving up too much, it's a no-brainer. Okafor isn't a top center, but he certainly doesn't suck and he could step right in with our veterans. It makes a lot of sense...

Three team trade maybe?

Bos- J Smith
Atl- E Okafor, #10 pick (NOH), #22 pick (Bos)
NOH- M Williams, #21 pick (Bos)

Would New Orleans want Williams?  It would allow them to amnesty Ariza and get a replacement who is an upgrade, while allowing them to clear room to sign Gordon and maybe bring back Kaman.  Is dumping Okafor's salary really enough reason to give up the #10 pick?

Would Atlanta being willing to part with Smith and Williams for Okafor and the #10 & #22 picks?  They'd be clearing salary, allowing Horford to move to his more natural PF position and Johnson to SF.  The #10 & #22 picks would be a boon to their necessary re-tooling.  Is any of this enough to part with Smith, they could easily just do the deal with New Orleans and keep Smith.  They have to trade Smith, as he is almost garaunteed to leave for nothing next year if they don't trade him.  Could they do better though?

For Boston, we'd have to renounce our FA's.  We'd be taking a chance there might not be enough money to bring back KG as well as enough other parts to field a contender.  We'd also be giving up two 1st round picks.  Still, if offered this trade, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
