ON CSNE last night:

http://www.csnne.com/sportsnetNewEngland/search/v/57679518/if-i-were-danny-ainge-garnett-trade-up-bench-help.htm

Ryan said 'rumor has it, they are very interested in Barnes.' First, does anyone really think Bob Ryan knows something that others in the media  don't, or is he just throwing **** against the wall, hoping it sticks?

They did workout Barnes out, one of the only prospects (if not the only one) slated to go top 5-7.

If there is truth to any of this, and Ainge is in fact trying to move up and draft him, what deal is being discussed?

I have to think he's talking to Sac about sending Pierce + #21/#22  for #5, Salmons and another bad contract. Maybe GS, but I don't think Barnes will be there at #7.

I don't see anybody else being moved for the 5th pick besides PP. He was almost dealt for BK's pick at the deadline (6th) Rondo isn't going anywhere. Maybe Bradley (But are teams really going to give up a high lottery pick for him?).

Nobody seems to have followed up on what Ryan said, so I'm not sure he has some kind of inside info, that Jackie Mac or other reporters covering the celtics don't.

Nonetheless, it is that time of year to speculate... I'd love to see Boston trade up into the lottery. But my feelings on Barnes, are eh. I've watched almost every game of his since he was a sr in high school and thought the world of him coming into UNC. By the time he left, I felt like he was the biggest disappointment in Carolina history. Great shot/pullup, first step, horrible ball handling/cant create for himself or others. For someone as big and strong as he is, he's almost nonexistant on the boards. Now he measured a legit 6'8 at the combine and put up great numbers - whatever that is worth. There were times where he reminded of a young Pierce, with a great first step, pullup jumper. And times where I thought he'd be lucky to reach Luol Dengs ceiling. So I don't even know what to think anymore.

Thoughts? Ideas?

(edit - spelling)

I'd be inclined to believe this is more speculation than rumor.

I don't think Bob Ryan is as plugged in as he once was.  Didn't he just retire from the Globe?

Yea, I have a feeling that Ryan is just going by the fact that they worked Barnes out, and assumes that they are 'very interested' in him.

I will say though, draft night might tell us a lot about the direction of the team going forward.

Danny does posses the assets to make a trade into the top 10 in the draft if he so chooses.  The thing is, those assets do likely include Pierce.  If Pierce gets traded KG is gone.

Basically, by the end of draft night, we'll likely know whether Danny is planning on keeping the core intact or rebuilding.

yeah it was already stated but I'd take this with a grain of salt... either way I could see Cleveland taking a package with the two firsts that would either include Bradley or Pierce for the 5th pick and taking Barnes... you just have to question if its worth it

I think Bob Ryan is plugged in and the Celtics are very interested. However, I don't see them as having the fire power to move up and get him without giving up Pierce, AB or Rondo. Maybe they are working on a package that moves our two firsts plus a future first, but anything more than that I don't see happening.

Here's a scenario, Barnes lasts until 7 but Golden State decides that he is very similar to Klay Thompson and look to trade the pick. We then offer them our two firsts and a future first to grab Barnes.

I think the only way I would be happy with trading up to get Barnes would be a package involving our (2) picks and Jeff Green.

Don't think it would be enough though.

I think Barnes could be the best player from this draft.

I know it sounds silly after his not-so-good sophomore year but he has great size for his position, he is a great shooter and draft combine showed that he is one of the best athletes in this draft.

I love Pierce, but I wouldn't mind if he was moved for a package that includes high pick (Barnes). I know, you all wanna shoot me now..  :(

Just because the Celtics are "interested" in Barnes doesn't mean will get him.  I also don't think that Ryan knows the draft projections and college ranks as well as most NBA nerds do.

That being said...the NBA draft projections are by no means a lock.  Teams trade picks and players every year.  No one knows where Harrison Barnes will eventually end up, either in draft position or on what team.

Danny could find a way to get him before everything is all said and done.

I'd be happy with this.  Just don't think the picks alone would be enough to get G.S. to bite.

All I know is that I thought the thread title referred to Matt Barnes, and I was about to throw up.

I would love to get Barnes.  I think he is the second best prospect in the draft overall.  He is a long way from meeting his (enormous) potential, but he has very little bust potential.  There are a few guys in the draft that have a decent chance to be better than him.  But other than Davis, no one who has the combination of being a lock for a quality starter, with the potential to be a superstar like Barnes does.

Unfortunately, I think it is unlikely Danny will be able to get him, unless he really blows things up.

Davis is the only one worthy of giving up two mid draft picks especially in this draft.  Danny would be foolish to do otherwise.  Pierce, moore, jjj, and a second rounder?  sure
