Boston can't trade draft picks this yea and include free agents or absorb salary

I've been seeing so many trades this year that involve draft picks this year and then also include signs and trades of free agents and/or the absorbtion of salary utilizing cap space.  Those trades are impossible. 

The draft is in June.  The season doesn't turn over until June 30th at midnight.  Free Agents can't be signed until the second week of July.  In other words, the earliest Boston could have cap space or sign and trade a free agent is July, which is after the draft.  So trades where Boston gets #10 and Okafor with no salary going to New Orleans, are impossible.  Likewise Boston can't trade 21 and 22 with Allen or Bass to some team to move up in the draft.  Now you could always trade the players drafted in a move in July (so if Boston gives up its rights, gets cap space, it could then trade for Okafor and whomever New Orleans drafted, but that can't happen until long after the draft), but those players have to be signed and thus their contracts have to be accounted for (it also means you actually have to want the player that some other team drafted).

Just thought a post on this might be useful since there have been a lot of proposed trades that just aren't feasible of late.

  It's not exactly unheard of for teams to make trades on draft day that aren't announced until a later date for reasons such as you've described.

Right all draft day trades are agreed to in principal. So we can trade picks for players in a deal thats agreed to in principal or pre arranged, but we must renounce first. Can we renounce players before the moratorium is up?

not at all because a player under contract can be traded, you just have to follow cap rules.

in theory that can happen, but how many times do you actually recall it happening.  Also, you can't do that with a free agent in a sign and trade because you can't guarantee a player will sign.

I really feel that Danny is up to something with the Hornets.  If we do agree to take on Okafor's contract and their #10 pick for our #'s 21 and 22 picks after renouncing Ray, when can we formalize and announce this?

Also, what do you think the likelihood of including a sign and trade of Bass for Landry (since Bass went to LSU and he might really compliment Davis more than Landry in New Orleans)??

The earliest such a trade could be formalized would be the first day after the July moratorium. While not strictly necessary, it's likely the rookies taken at #10, #21, and #22 would not yet be signed to contracts (draft rights have no value in terms of salary cap calculations).

Didn't Bass already play for NO at one point? Would they want to reacquire him? If so, Boston would have to complete a very complicated trade to get Landry in return, as both are free agents. It'd require a sign and trade of both players to their new teams, although it might be easier to break it into two trades: a player absorbed into his new team's cap space for a conditional draft pick, for instance.

Of course, it would be much simpler to have NO sign Bass as a FA, and Boston sign Landry as a FA, and not have to worry about devising a trade that would work according to the CBA.

I think people agreeing to something in principal is a lot more binding (in practice, not legally) than you're making it seem.

I think its so commonplace that we literally just don't hear about it. I've heard, 'they need to wait until blah blah to officially complete the trade' more than a few times.
