I think a lot of the perceived loss of Perk fall out has really been just poor depth at the 4/5. We actually did OK this year given all of our injuries (given that we found Steamer and Hollins).
I mean can you argue that we lost in 2010 because Perk was out? Yeah. But could you also argue that if Danny actually had gotten a playable 5th big man (especially given that KG was coming off surgery, Rasheed was old, and BBD was undersized and out of shape) that we could've overcome the injury. It was really that the Celtics ran out of steam (and fouls) in the closing minutes of the game at the 4/5 spot. I think even having a Hollins or a Steamer (rather than a Sheldon Williams) might've translated to a Finals win.
And it wasn't like we missed Perk last. We were dominant without him the first half of the season. It was that we lost Shaq, JO never fully recovered from his injuries, and we were stuck with Krstic, BBD, and KG as our only legit bigs.
This isn't a shot at Perk. I loved him when he was here and I still root for him. However, I think the Celtics inability to even find passable 5th and 6th bigs has really been their problem up until this season, where they actually did a nice job picking up people like Steamer, Hollins, and even Williams.
