Why wouldn't a team like Charlotte claim him off of amnesty?

They have the unused cap space, and then they can deal him to a needy contender at the deadline.  They'd probably be able to score a late 1st out of the deal if a contender thought they were one big man away from a potential title.

Teams claiming players off amnesty waivers can't trade them until next July.

And Brand only has a year left on his contract, so effectively they'd never be able to use him as a trade asset.

Regardless, that would be a no brainer for Charlotte. That team is in sore need of veteran, character players. Former Dukie as well.

If he does get amnestied, someone will pick him up on the waiver wire.

Indiana would be a strong candidate. They are under the cap, right? Brand be an excellent backup PF for David West.

Charlotte has too many PFs already. Brand would only get in the way.

Edit: Wait, that might be wrong. I have it in my head that they have too many PFs but I can't think of them now. Maybe that was from before the draft when they were expected to add Thomas Robinson (adding more PFs to them after drafting him wouldn't make sense - I remember reading Bobcats fans talking about that and having too many PFs).

Let's see (1) Tyrus Thomas (2) maybe DJ White (3) Biyombo is another maybe depending on whether they want him at PF or C. Yeah, I take it back, I think Brand would be okay there. Brand and Biyombo would be interchangeable and Tyrus can go back to his 6th man role. DJ White as the fourth big in the rotation.

He's probably more of a Center in today's NBA though.  We just saw an Eastern Conference Finals with Bosh and KG at Center.  He might be too slow for PF.

Evan Turner for Josh Smith?

PG: Jrue Holiday
OG: Nick Young
SF: Andre Iguodala, Moe Harkless
PF: Josh Smith, Thaddeus Young
C:  Spencer Hawes, Nikola Vucevic

Atlanta build around their cap flexibility, Al Horford (PF/C) and Evan Turner (SG/SF).

That'd be good move for this year, but I don't know if the 76ers would do it. How much would they be will to pay Smith?

Plus the salary gymnastics would be complicated wouldn't they?

Brand would be a great help to us, he still is a solid defensive, and he played very well the last playoff but I do not know if we have enough space.
Brand + KG + Bass + would be a very strong frontcourt.

Indiana can be a strong candidate.

The Sixers are below the cap now. If they amnesty Brand. Is that right? That would allow them to take on the extra salary from Evan Turner to Josh Smith.

They wouldn't have much cap flexibility after signing Smith to an extension though. Smith, Holiday and Iggy would be close to $40 million by themselves. Hawes another $6.5. Thaddeus gets another $6-7 million. That is over $50 million with those five players. They would have to move with that core or trade their way up.

I remember Philly came close to signing Josh Smith when he was a free agent last time around. That was with Ed Stefanski as GM though. Only went away from J.Smith because Brand became available.

Can you use cap exceptions when bidding on amnesties?  If so, we could bid the bi-annual and see what happens.  He's only on a 1-year deal, and most contenders are short on cap/exceptions room except for Dallas (not that they're a contender anyway.  God they screwed the pooch.)  I guess Indiana has room assuming they let Hibbert walk.

Brand to be amnestied for room for Nick Young

Philly is going to use the amnesty clause on Brand so that it can sign Nick Young to a 1 yr, 6 million dollar contract.

I wonder who will go after Brand, as he has just 1 year left.

I don't believe you can use exceptions. Has to be cap room.
