What if KG retires?

If KG retires... it's fair to say that there absolutely unquestionably will be NO free agent available who can replace what he does for this team... and unless Ainge gets extremely creative, you better not put any money on another deep playoff run next year.

Let's hope he comes back.  He was the MVP of this team during this playoff run.

I'd disagree.  KG was clearly the MVP.  His efficiency was pretty much the same as Rondo's per 48 minutes, but his +/- was far superior.

You can't use +/- for that. Since Rondo played 44+ minutes each night, he will get the full effect of the difference between KG and Stiemsma/Hollins included in his stats.

I think KG will 100% come back for something reasonable.
In fact I think he'd come back for petty money and would probably tell Danny that he's coming back if he is sold that they can make another legit title run. He has $300 mill career earnings, he doesn't need more and a championship is worth 100 million to him, it's certainly worth giving up 10 million for.

Something along the lines of:
KG: Danny I want a starting caliber NBA PF/Center to roam the paint with me.
DA: Sure, we can get Millsap or Peckovic for 10-12 million if you take 4 million.
KG:Deal. I also want another back up power forward to come in for me that can score, rebound and hit free throws (Lamar Odom anyone?).
DA: Deal.

If KG leaves or retires, we're best off tanking and spending the least amount of money we can under the CBA.  This will offend fantasy-basketball fans, but it's a weak free agent class and signing up players to achieve mediocrity is the last thing you want to do if chasing championships is your goal.

Time to tank would have been this season.  Supposedly the next draft class (2013) is total garbage.   Best off just bringing everyone back and hoping for the best.

If KG retires then sadly our best bet, from a franchise perspective, is to try to trade Pierce. Perhaps to the Warriors who are said to be looking to trade the #7 for a SF. I would look to re-sign Green, try to acquire picks and/or other assets from teams looking to shed cap by taking on reasonable contracts that will not hurt us past 2 years, and try to target a couple of young players, that will excel in the transition game, this summer under reasonable deals (think McGee for DeAndre Jordan type money and Mayo for for around 6 or 7M).

The Warriors have pick Nos. 7, 30, 35 and 52, and they don't want to make selections with all four. Instead, they'd like to trade a couple of them for either a proven upgrade at small forward, move up to draft Kentucky small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or secure future assets.

So long as Danny wants to bring the team back together and continue to compete for a title, I expect KG to be back for another year or two.

If Danny decides to start rebuilding, which looks very unlikely, I think there is a real chance KG walks away.

Call me a pessimist, but I cannot see anything getting better after this year with Garnett. Would I like him back? Sure. But despite what's said about Rondo this team, as it's been proven again and again only goes as far as Garnett can carry them. We saw a resurgent KG in the playoffs, yes but we also saw too much fatigue and defensive lapses from him, too.

Next year everything will be back to normal and we'll play 82 games before the playoffs. This team can't go that long without breaking down physically and being exhausted by the end of the season.

This run, this window and this era just needs to be done. We can't win a championship as constructed and I love everything about this team but we need to let go.

I agree that the chances of us winning another title with this group are looking slimmer and slimmer.  However, I think we can make the playoffs again next year, and if we have more depth and healthier role players, who knows, we might be able to make another deep run.

My thing is that if we don't re-sign KG, I don't see any other moves out there that make us more of a contender next year.

As far as rebuilding for the future, I think we are in that position that so many seem to think is a oxymoron where we can ride it out while staying competitive and at the same time patiently build our squad for the future with Rajon Rondo as our leader, Doc Rivers as our Coach, and the Celtic Pride and Mystique as a major part of the package for success.

agreed, playoff experience is only going to quicken the maturation process for guys like Bradley and our draft picks this year. Hopefully JJJ is also ready to contribute next year so he can get some playoff experience.

There aren't any real good fa's this summer anyways so why not bring back kg, ray (vet min) and green ? add that to bradley coming back and hopefully being able to sign a vet big man like lamar odom or Rashard Lewis on a 1 year deal around 5 mil.

Compete for 1 more year then let the big 3 walk away together (i think pp's contract isn't fully guaranteed for 2013-14)

You do know KG had no real backup or help down low and this was a compressed lockout season right? You know we were injured as hell with season ending ones right, and still were one win away from the finals? Last time I checked we also were not swept or steamrolled we're there until the final minutes
