I can see what cdif is saying in theory, but I think a lot of the responses are right. He's focusing a lot on how he thinks Boston will cone out (tired), but what about Miami? He's right, if the Cs want a decent shot against the heat, they need to take at least one of the two games in Miami, but the heat could just as easily come out rusty or flustered or cold. Doesn't matter which game you win, you gotta win one, ideally both. And, with the Celtics habit of being incapable of stringing together 2 consecutive solid games, you gotta try to win every one

terrible idea.
I read the OP three times and still don't understand what he's trying to say or prove. Umm no you don't tank playoff games.

point is you need to win 1 out of 2 games to gain homecourt back.  They're not winning game 1 after only getting 1 day of rest, so why not concede and give yourself a legitimate shot at game 2.  Otherwise you're going into game 2 with again 1 days rest and diminished odds. I know it's an out there theory, but it could actually work

Something tells me you would not be a good coach.

Think about what you are saying here. Realistic or not, all your doing is "QUITTING".

What if they lose game 2? You would instantly be fired and rightfully so.

If Miami comes out flat or the supporting cast doesnt do well , Celtics could steal game 1.

These guys would never sit out a playoff game. Watching from the bench in a game in this situation is probably more torturous to them than being waterboarded.

He's right, if the Cs want a decent shot against the heat, they need to take at least one of the two games in Miami, but the heat could just as easily come out rusty or flustered or cold.

So, the better strategy might be to play the starters as usual with a safe, conservative, low-energy game plan while they see how Miami starts out.  If the Heat start slow, the Celtics can crank it up and pounce in Game 1.  Instead of punting immediately, give the Heat a chance to beat themselves first.

Not that I support the idea of tanking a playoff game at all.

lol that'd be awesome.

you shouldn't have said tank. you should have said rest the starters for game 1 and hope for the best with the bench.

If Doc actually does that (as unlikely as it may be), I hope they give Miami all they can handle (and maybe even win) like they did against the Hawks.

Who knows? the Heat are mentally weak. Maybe we can start the bench and the starters can play the final 5 minutes lol

I'm for it.

Actually this might be a better idea. Play the starters sparingly.

  • You say when......
With our injuries, one game, 2 nights rest will help little......tanking a playoff game is a bad idea. Win any and all games vs miami that you can. Win 2 in miami.....it will be tougher than any so far.....we DON'T have one to throw away....

  • It's all about the TEAM!
These are the times you enjoy as a fan, not continue to write doomsday theories.

Let's support this team and take it one game at time. Be critical of their performance on a game by game basis, but perhaps try to avoid saying "this teams done" before they're actually done.

Amen and TP!

As for the tank deal......

We couldnt afford to tank one with the 76ers. They got our backs against the wall. We need to take every chance we can get to win each and every game.

Until Ray plays strictly on One Leg, we need to cheer them on until the fat lady sings and both teams are bloody all over the floor.

Those guys are not going to take games lightly anymore, you see it their switch is flipped they are going to attack us or whoever as hard as they can. I said it before if facing the Heat the loss of Bradley was just huge he's why were ridiculous defensively at times, not sure if we did or nearly did break record for having some of the best defense of all time. He was a big part of it.

Grande actually talked about the concept on Bill Simmons podcast from Friday -- pointing to the first Orlando game in 09 after that series with the Bulls.  Orlando smoked them in Game 1, which came 2 days after Game 7 vs the Bulls.

Actually I don't think it's a bad concept.  I would give the C's next to zero chance of winning a Game 1 in Miami vs a rested Lebron & Wade unless Saturday's game turns out to be a blowout. This team is on fumes right now anyway.

Would love to see what kind of a fine Stern would come up with...

The best reason for the C's to tank game one would be to show Doc that Sasha's defense is really important against the Heat.

Oh well.

This makes a lot of sense, but I would do one more thing. Whenever Paul Pierce or Ray Allen are not on the floor, I would have the other 2's and 3's running from side to side (ala Ray Allen) and have Wade and Lebron chase them through screens. This way, if the Heat's superstars chase them all game long they'll be worn down and exhausted, which is great for the game and the series. If they don't do it, we get open shots. In short, frequently rotate between Pietrus, Dooling, Moore, Pavlovic, and Marquis (5 minutes at a time each) and just keep them running without the ball.
