Can someone explain how having a bum ankle affects standstill free throw shooting?

When you shoot, you raise your whole body, from the feet to the chest a little bit so that you can be closer to being in line with the basket, to gain more precision..

Ray has bone spurs on his ankles and every time he does that it causes pain that affects his release, so that's the reason behind his poor FT shooting.

By poor, I mean poor for him.

oh...nice to see someone who knows the deal...shooting is all thru the body..esp when you are a pure form guy like ray...and a sprained ankle, or spurs...god those are def enough to make you twitch....and or be off just enough......

Have you ever shot a free throw? The motion goes from your ankle, to your toes, to your legs then you use your wrist. Ray goes up on his toes like most.
I had a bum ankle a year ago. Never been much of a shooter (understatement) but it messes with your balance and concentration. It's not comfortable because you're thinking about the distribution of weight on your feet.

Try shooting on one foot. It's like that but to a much lesser degree. That's just me though.

All in all great first half but we gotta make the freebies. Can't expect to win without them. And Rondo and Ray it seems have switched places in this regard so far tonight.

I haven't been listening to the broadcast and didn't see a graphic, but the box score says that the lead 24-16 on the boards.  I know there were a few Pierce put back attempts, but still -- nice not to be outrebounded.

Celtics go 32-16 in the quarter and all anybody talks about is how they didn't finish strong enough because of a fluke three.  It's so painful to read these forums sometimes because of the overwhelming pessimism even when we have our fist down their throats.
The negativity on this board s****!

Shooting free throws you don't exert much torque from lower extremity. The form and follow-through critical to making free throws.

This is a brilliant suggestion.

Yes, but even exerting minimal torque causes pain when someone has bone spurs
When you lose, the easy part is to see who gives up. Giving up is very simple. You basically take your stuff and walk away. To continue to work and to continue to compete is one of the most difficult things, especially when you really don't have anything - KG

Paul didn't make the 3 pointer, but besides that I'm happy with the lead.
Rajon has been aggressive tonight and KG has been great too. I hope we can keep it going into the third and finish it out tonight.

YOU...don't...RAY does.....have you ever played on a sprained ankle...bone spurs in your ankle......it makes A LOT of diff in your movement....why are you doubting Ray..let his life be your proof...91% in the very recent past..now he misses a few, AND has bone spurs.....don't go getting them just to find out.....it is REAL...RAY is the man....one of ours....besides, in running and shooting, you play on adrenaline...pain later....at the free throw line..it can catch up with you again.....

I am the worst shooter in history, so I can safely say that I know nothing about shooting mechanics, but I'll just add this to the conversation:  It's surprising to see Ray is missing FTs despite the ankle issues.
