3. Rondo is a slightly above average jump shooter in the NBA.
When compared to other guards... or when compared to big men who don't shoot jump shots?

Apparently he shoots like 26% from 3-9 feet and 28% from 10-15 feet.

at rim = 58.9% (average is 62.6%) his 3-9 feet is 26% (average is 37.5%) his 10-15 feet is 27.8% (average is 38.3%) his eFG% from three is 35.7% (average is 52.3%)

It is a bit of a stretch.  However, we are officially and literally the worst offensive rebounding NBA team in history.  How many KG put-backs have you seen in the last three years?  It appears that Rondo called this spot on, and KG acknowledged him.

I'm not following.  So you think Rondo planned this?

I find that unlikely.  First, Rondo's goal was to make the shot, not miss it.  Second, if that shot caroms off to the left or right, KG crashing the boards like that does no good.  I don't think there was a lot that was pre-planned about that play.

It was a good move to get an open shot by Rondo, and a great effort by KG to get the put back, but I don't think it was anything more than that.

Why do we even care about Rondo's jumpshot at this point? Our starting PF and Center shoot jumpshots. The entire reason why that lineup works is because the bigs spread the floor while our great cutters in Rondo and Bradley go to work.

For his career his numbers are higher than the average.

Of course he planned to make the shots, but he saw the defense collapsing around him, and KG was not hitting the offensive glass.  He told KG to get to the rim and he did.  The shot itself is very soft.  KG, a great rebounder, would've gotten it anywhere off the rim.

  • You say when......
Im pretty sure everyone on this forum expected a triple double from Rondo in this game.

A fairly astounding statement, considering that only 14 or so players have more than 2 playoff triple doubles in their careers.

I know.to say we expect him to be great..then if he makes 2 turnovers..the trade chants start...as if there is a better player just standing by waiting/wanting to play for the C's..and the SMALL money rondo gets......

Maybe an expert will set me straight, but it seems logical that we'd be terrible offensive rebounding.  I think it starts with Rondo.  Rondo can't shoot.  He's a horrible shooter.  It's established.  Downright terrible.   He can hit shots 2 feet from the basket and beyond that he's a liability.   So our offense is built around that.  Ray spreads the floor and keeps defenders on him.  Pierce is a dynamic scorer who always needs attention.  Then you have both KG and Bass whose offense relies on mid-range jumpers.  Why mid-range jumpers?... because it keeps the opposing team's bigs out of the paint on defense... allowing Rondo to penetrate inside and hit shots within his range (2 feet from the basket).   Because our team has no low post presence (somewhat intentionally), we rarely have bigs in rebounding position.  They are too busy floating around mid-range giving Rondo assist opportunities and giving Rondo room to penetrate inside.  It's also PART of the reason Rondo has such inflated rebound numbers for a guard... a lot of balls just bounce to him and he happens to be the one in best position to get it.

Our offense was great with Shaq on the low post, it was perfectly fine with Perk on the low post and we do well with KG on the low post. I don't see any evidence that they've tried to avoid having low post players, or any evidence that we've been unable to score with such players.

Ok, so Rondo reminds KG to be there for the put back if he misses. Very important reminder and perhaps sad that he has to make it; but wise none the less.

Obviously, I don't know if that is what happened.  It's just connecting three things I noticed.  But if it is true, then it shows great BBIQ and trust, because normally KG is supposed to get back on defense in that situation according to Doc's philosophy.

It was a nice play by Rondo.  Of course he was trying to make the shot, but he also knows instinctually that once he's in there that if he lays it up soft enough, KG will be there for the putback.

Rondo was completely collapsing the Hawks' defense. He could have been saying "Screw Doc's system for now.  I got them by the ****s. Stop running back on D and go for the O-rebound."

Plausible?
