Hes getting awarded basically for what he did last year with Dallas...While he was a big part of that team people have overrated him greatly this year and even last...Dallas overall wasnt as good this year for several reasons not just because the loss of him, and frankly the Knicks havent been any better with him either
The Knicks had a better win percentage this year with him than they did last year, they also got far far less from Amar'e than last year. (as in Amar'e was a positive player for them last year, this year he was a big negative)

Thats fair, he did provide a a bit of a difference just by the fact he does care about defense and hes a 7 footer...but him winning DPOY is about the equivalent of Perkins winning it
Did our defense get worse without Perkins? lose a game 7 when he was injured? yes
Did OKC get considerably better with him on that end? yes
is he a DPOY? no

well said, TP

KG destroyed chandler when matched up against him this year. He probably is like Perk prior to knee injury which is good but def not the best.

Also, again, very curious as to what the defense was ranked before and after D'Antoni.
Their defense was good all year, the difference was more that Carmelo didnt' play good offensive ball for D'Antoni.

What were the defensive numbers before Mike Woodson took over too? I thought once that switch happened the defense changed dramatically although I could be mistaken
You are, they've been a top 10 defense all year.

Under Mike D'Antoni they were a 9th best defensive team, and were even higher for stretches. When Carmelo quit on D'Antoni they cratered in most areas.

For example March 1st they were fifth in the league, then Carmelo quit playing and they dropped to 9th.

A lot of these awards are media driven.

I am not at all surprised Chandler won.

Like Perk, he didn't have gaudy stats but if I'm building a defensive minded team, KG's probably the only other center I want playing for me right now other than Chandler.

Uh, wait, what?  ;)

KG is not a C

Playing these players out of position....and I mean this without insult... is just plain dumb.

They went from bottom 22nd to 5th in the league defensively, that's a massive jump with the otherwise limited defensive players they have. Chandler and Shumpert made a huge difference.

I would've given the award to Garnett. But the above is the reason Chandler deserves to be in the conversation.

Some Twittering on DPOY:

Quote
Alex Kennedy: "If it wasn't for my teammates' poor defense, I would have never won this award." - Tyson Chandler joked at DPOY press conference.

Royce Young: Russell Westbrook actually picked up one third place Defensive Player of the Year vote

John Hollinger: Ibaka: fine shot-blocker and all, but DPOY would have been worst vote since Camby won in '07 without showing on a S/R the entire season.

Jessica Camerato: KG: 2 1st place votes, 9 2nd place votes, 7 3rd place votes (44 pts) / Bradley: 2 3rd place votes (2 pts) for Def. Player of Yr.

"The worst thing that ever happened in sports was sports radio, and the internet is sports radio on steroids with lower IQs.” -- Brian Burke, former Toronto Maple Leafs senior adviser, at the 2013 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

They're playing the team with the MVP, another top 5 MVP caliber player, and an all-star big man in Bosh.

Meanwhile he's got Melo and Steve Novak?

This is pathetic, you can't give a guy the DPOY award when his team is horrible defensively... I'm sorry. Lebron, Josh Smith, Ibaka, KG, Iguodala, Tim Duncan, and hell even Paul Pierce deserve this award above Chandler.

My vote would personally go to Ibaka or Lebron.

The messiah?  He gets away with as much on the defensive end (hacking in particular) and absolutely knows he'll never foul out of a game...He's still a slightly better than average defender.

A spectacular weakside block doesn't make a great defensive player.

I have no problem with Chandler.  By any measurable standard, the Knicks are infinitely better defensively when he is on the court.

Okay at this point I've gone over it enough I'm just going to call you out.

Have you either
A) read this thread?
or
B) watched the Knicks plays this year other than when they play the C's

Because if you really think the Knicks are horrible defensively you've done neither of options above.

Here are the teams better than the Knicks defensively this year:
Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami

That is it, that's the list. The Hawks are as good as them and after that the Grizzlies and Mavericks are in the same ballpark. But they're clearly not a bad defensive team this year, they just aren't.

Steve Novak is the best shooter in NBA History, they have to at least win 2 games.
