Media got sick of giving it to Dwight Howard.

They gotta stop letting the media vote for these things and hand it back over to the players.

I second that.

Yeah he improved their all time terrible defense a little bit. Awesome. Still the exact same team they were last year. Did their winning percentage even improve?

To me they are just basing this off of last year with Dallas and that playoff run. Everyone wanted so bad for  him to have a KG like impact defensively for the Knicks that they just made it a bigger deal than it was
A little bit?

They went from bottom 22nd to 5th in the league defensively, that's a massive jump with the otherwise limited defensive players they have. Chandler and Shumpert made a huge difference.
those numbers mean nothing, when they get their behind handed to them, or in better words, they can't stop "elite" teams from scoring less than 90 or even 100 points:

Focusing on raw points in games isn't very informative, pace matters.

Hes getting awarded basically for what he did last year with Dallas...While he was a big part of that team people have overrated him greatly this year and even last...Dallas overall wasnt as good this year for several reasons not just because the loss of him, and frankly the Knicks havent been any better with him either, even with some improved defense  Tyson chandler has been extremly overrated since Dirk carried the mavs to a title simple as that

The Knicks had a better win percentage this year with him than they did last year, they also got far far less from Amar'e than last year. (as in Amar'e was a positive player for them last year, this year he was a big negative)

The Knicks apparently have the DPOY and didn't improve one bit.

You can say they had injuries but that gets somewhat negated when they have ian undrafted rookie explode along with several other talented players added to the roster.

Not to mention for being "the 5th best defense " I don't think anyone gives them any respect for there defense or is intimidated by it in the slightest

What were the defensive numbers before Mike Woodson took over too? I thought once that switch happened the defense changed dramatically although I could be mistaken

Individual season awards are fickle. For example, Rose only won MVP because of public backlash against LeBron. Not that Rose isn't a fine player, but he really isn't an MVP.

I think going forward in the Philly series will give you an idea of exactly valuable Rose is.  They're essentially a better defensive version of the Denver Nuggets without him. If they survive the Philly series they won't the next.  They have nobody to take over...Ala what Pierce did last night.  Have to have that in the playoffs.

Thats fair, he did provide a a bit of a difference just by the fact he does care about defense and hes a 7 footer...but him winning DPOY is about the equivalent of Perkins winning it
Did our defense get worse without Perkins? lose a game 7 when he was injured? yes
Did OKC get considerably better with him on that end? yes
is he a DPOY? no

OMG, really, I could name 5 more deserving guys for this award

Tyson definitely deserved it. its funny how much people dont realize the improved Knicks defense. Its really been their offense this year that has faltered them, at least under Woodson. Chandler had a lesser effect of what KG did to the Celtics. And since Woodson has been there he has gotten Melo to buy into the defense all started with chandlers presence.

If the knicks had more flow on offense and a better system then give melo the ball in isolation then they would be a much much more dangerous team. 47% of plays where melo shot the ball got fouled or made a turnover were isolation plays... thats pretty absurd.

Chandler gets my vote.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean he deserved to win the MVP last year.  He didn't.

And the same can absolutely be said of the other elite players in the game.  Do the Heat do this well with Lebron?  Or the Mavs without Dirk?  Or the Thunder without Durant?  etc.

Rose is a great player, but he was not the most valuable player in the league last year, which I think was borne out a bit this year when he missed 25 games and Chicago was still a very good team.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Chandler has been talked about as the front-runner for the award for most of the season.  The bloggers of the TrueHoop network gave it to him.  The Knicks went from 22nd with 110.1 points per 100 possessions allowed (aka Defensive Rating) to 5th and 101.0 points per 100 possessions allowed.  (League average declined from 107.3 to 104.6.)

I have no problem with this.

This isn't a team award. Its an individual award and the fact is that centers couldn't score against new york because Chandler is a beast of a defensive player.

Chandler is what Perk was trying to be three years ago, the best low post defender against big men in the league. Like Perk, he didn't have gaudy stats but if I'm building a defensive minded team, KG's probably the only other center I want playing for me right now other than Chandler.

He was an amazing low post defensive presence this year without a stitch of help coming from the other centers and forwards on that New York team.

I think its a good choice.

KG destroyed chandler when matched up against him this year. He probably is like Perk prior to knee injury which is good but def not the best.

Also, again, very curious as to what the defense was ranked before and after D'Antoni.

This award was picked before the season started pretty much. Everyone was talking about him to start the season, then the Knicks d sucked and people ignored it then it picked up later on in the season, Dwight Howard was involved in his fiasco and guys like KG and lebron all ready get enough love
