well he did bring defense to the defenseless knicks... although an argument could definitely be made for kg or d12 over him

Media got sick of giving it to Dwight Howard.

They gotta stop letting the media vote for these things and hand it back over to the players.

Doesn't make much sense to me, I'm pretty sure the Knicks were still in the bottom half of the league defensively (or at least pretty [dang] close). Should have been either Dwight Howard or KG. Could have made a case for Ibaka too, 3.6 BPG are you kidding me?

I'd have given it to KG just for the simple fact that this team was the best defensive squad in all of basketball this year. But oh well, individual awards mean diddly. Let Chandler have his award, we'll go ring hunting.

Really? Are you kidding me? No member of this year's NY Knicks team should even be considered for a defensive award imo. That's terrible.

Eh, if they got tired of giving it to Howard then Tyson or KG was the next best choice.

Rose winning MVP last year was worse in my view.

Individual season awards are fickle. For example, Rose only won MVP because of public backlash against LeBron. Not that Rose isn't a fine player, but he really isn't an MVP.

Furthermore, often season awards are more favorable towards sudden turn-arounds as opposed to sustained excellence. Besides the backlash against D12, KG and the Celtics have been consistently good defensively for several years. Not that KG doesn't deserve a dozen of DPOYs, but consistent excellence doesn't surprise anyone (and many pundits just waive their hands and call it the system, not the players, anyway).

And, like it or not, Chandler had a HUGE impact.

Last year, the Knicks were 27th in the league defensively. This year, they were 11th. (Going by points allowed).

If you look at opponent FG%, they went from 26th to 10th.

Awards love big turn-arounds like that. Chandler DOES deserve the award. KG deserves it more, but whatcha gonna do?

David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Good for Tyson.  It must be really frustrating to have to play with Amare Stoudemire who is quite possibly the most disinterested "superstar" I've ever seen on the defensive end.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

This should have been a NO brainer.  Ibaka averaged 3.65 blocks and would have had 6.46 over 48 minutes (first in the NBA).

Chandler averaged 1.44 and would have averaged 2.07 over 48 minutes (24th in the NBA).

OKC won 47 games or 71% of their games.

NY won 36 games or 54.5% of their games.

As for NY's improvement in defensive stats:  I am sure that Shumpurt had NOTHING to do with that improvement and it was ALL Tyson Chandler.

The NBA is now a total joke, from these awards (see last year's MVP for further proof) to the refs to David Stern to the corrupt player's association (see impended legal trouble for Hunter's led crew from the feds).

there is more to defense than just blocking shots.  Ibaka's opponents shoot better, rebound more, pass more, and have a much higher PER than Chandler's opponents.  And Chandler isn't playing next to Kendrick Perkins.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Yeah Ibaka would be fourth at best on my ballot, probably fifth.

Yeah he improved their all time terrible defense a little bit. Awesome. Still the exact same team they were last year. Did their winning percentage even improve?

To me they are just basing this off of last year with Dallas and that playoff run. Everyone wanted so bad for  him to have a KG like impact defensively for the Knicks that they just made it a bigger deal than it was

A little bit?

They went from bottom 22nd to 5th in the league defensively, that's a massive jump with the otherwise limited defensive players they have. Chandler and Shumpert made a huge difference.
