I think this is just a miscommunication on the part of Bass and Pierce. Pietrus like you said, looks like afraid to get hit and after that horrific head injury he probably is still concerened about it.

Rebounding, in general is overrated.

I think the example picture just shows that the team is putting a lot of emphasis on getting the board...all 3 guys were to concerned with focusing on the rebound instead of focusing on what/who was around them.
