According to Gary Washburn we can still defer the pick

Gary Washburn: Remember, the #celtics don't have to take #clippers pick for 2012 draft but it is believed they will. Pick is top 10 protected until 2016

I would just take it this year though because I love having back to back picks to draft the 2 players we want . Back to back picks in the early 20's of a deep draft can also be great chips if trying to make a deal. The c's will have so much cap room that they could take back a 10 mil+ salary player for the picks or they could use the picks to try and move up to the 13-16 range.

I only package the picks if I can land a Josh Smith type player or if I can move up in the draft to grab Myeres Leonard,Austin Rivers, Perry Jones.

Interesting.  I've never heard there was a roll-over provision on this pick.  I'd like to see another source besides Washburn on this.

For the love of God, wait until 2016 and snag a lottery pick when Griffin and Paul bail.

Never know about Danny ...he might trade RAY or Avery in a three way deal or some scheme to move up and get a player he and Doc want really bad.  Trying to guess what DA might do is impossible .   Great poker face.

No, it's true. I've been reading that since day 1. I'll look for you.

The Celtics will also have their own pick at No. 21, giving them back-to-back selections in what is considered a draft that is short on star power, but deep in potential contributors. The pick from the Clippers carried top-10 protection through 2016, but that became moot after they acquired Chris Paul and emerged as a playoff team in the Western Conference. The Clippers won a tiebreaker with the Hawks for the 22nd pick.

Great news! You never know when 1 pick higher can be the difference between drafting a Granger over a Green.

...or Paul Pierce vs Bonzi Wells  ;D

players in the 15 range that I would trade both picks for in this draft would be

1)Myers Leonard
2)Austin Rivers
3)Perry Jones
4)Terrence Jones

C's would have to be getting a 2nd rd pick back in return I would think.

Otherwise if we keep both picks I want 2 out of these players

1)Terrence Ross
2)Royce White
3)Moe Harkless
4)Dion Waiters
5)Arnett Moultrie

I would be really pumped if we got a combo of White or Harkless and Ross or Waiters

I still think we must be thinking about drafting Rivers possibly if we move up.

I would love to see Perry Jones or Meyers Leonard as well if moving up, would also take Sullinger if available.

^This

from the range 15 - 25, I am interested in Terrance Jones, and Royce White. I've heard that Dion Waiters is good though

I'd say 21+22 can be packaged to move you up no farther than maybe 15th.

I really don't see a good opportunity to move up in the draft.  You need a team with a higher pick that doesn't covet the player you want and doesn't like anyone likely to go in the next few picks either.  This seems like the sort of draft where there are several players in the second half of the first round that some teams are going to fall in love with.

I think there's probably going to be a better value available if Ainge looks to move down with one of the picks in exchange for a later pick plus a future first rounder than there is packaging them and moving up.

But it really depends on if Ainge sees a player who he thinks has great potential and whether or not that player will be available in the mid-teens or if Ainge projects he will slip to the late twenties.

That doesn't say that the Celtics can opt to rollover the pick, though.  (I know it has protection for the Clippers benefit, but it would be very unusual for the Celtics to also have the option of refusing the pick.)

That would be a very rare and surprising detail.

Washburn describes how I've understood this pick since day 1. That the Celtics can rollover the pick ala the Denver Nuggets pick back in the day.

Celtics receive the Clippers' 2012 first-round pick, via Thunder (Eric Bledsoe trade) (top 10 protected in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, unprotected in 2016. In 2012, the Celtics would receive the lesser of the Clippers first-round pick or the T'Wolves' first-round pick (Marko Jaric trade)) (Jeff Green trade 02-24-11)

Where does that link, or the previous one, indicate a roll-over provision?

If there's a roll-over provision, they should roll this one over until 2016, when the Clippers will probably be back in the lottery.  However, I strongly, strongly doubt that there's a roll-over provision.

Where does it say that the Clippers choose when the pick gets sent to us? I don't know, maybe I'm confused and so isn't Washburn, but that is how I interpret the trade.

First available opportunity to redeem the pick is the standard practice. Plus I can't imagine LA would let the C's (or thunder previously) decide when to exercise the pick, considering it would be a minor miracle for the Clippers to remain elite for 5 straight years.

Then again they are the Clippers....
