first all the appropriate caveats...only saw williams in the fourth quarter of a scrub/garbage time game....
but...
his athletic ability was clearly better than any big boston now has. he can leap and high. he can rebound with ferocity. and he has a great sense of how to block shots.
yet, as i watched him, i saw he was completely lost on most defensive rotations. but what else would we expect from a guy who has seen virtually zero practice time in a complex defensive system?
if williams really is brilliant then he will learn the rotations soon enough. i think his problem...aside from acting like a knucklehead repeatedly and with vigor... is he may relay more upon his athleticism and less upon team defense.
that is, he might not follow doc's master plan and simply decide he can block shots all by himself and team defense be [dang]ed. this is a personality problem, not an intelligence problem. if so, the celtics cut him loose.
color me interested in williams. he is a long shot to over come immaturity, but it does happen sometimes. honestly, i can see williams as a long-term celtic, playing great defense and rebounding.
if both williams and steamer can play as a tandum the celtics would be fine at center.
