Goodell wasn't messing around, he's definitely trying to send a message.  1 year ban is pretty brutal.

That's crazy. Too bad for Sean Payton, I highly doubt he was the only coach condoning this stuff but looks like he'll be the posterboy for why you shouldn't do it.

Saints season is basically doomed now, I would think.  Now what direction do they go as far as head coach?

Yeah, Goodell is definitely making an example here.

Never good to be the first one to get caught in a situation that everybody already knew existed in some form.

Pretty severe penalty, but given that they were paying guys to try and injure other players, it seems appropriate.  There's no place for paying someone to seriously hurt a guy, even in a violent sport like football.

And I'm sure the NFL was extremely unthrilled that the payoff from a pool like this could reduce or even exceed their fines for illegal hits.

Saints get SLAMMED by Good ole Goodell.....

Wow!

NEW YORK (AP)—The NFL has suspended New Orleans head coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is banned from the league indefinitely because of the team’s bounty program that
Commissioner Roger Goodell will review Williams’ status after the upcoming season and consider whether he can return to the league.

Also Wednesday, Goodell suspended Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight regular-season games of 2012, and assistant coach Joe Vitt has to sit out the first six games. Gregg Williams left the Saints in January to take over the Rams' defense.

In addition, the Saints are being fined $500,000 and forfeit second-round draft picks this year and in 2013.

Problem is that Payton had to know Williams' history prior to hiring him.  He's known Williams for years.

Tale of two commissioners.

One presides over overt star-based officiating.  States that flopping will be officiated in earnest while watching it increase.  Diciplines players based on their stature.  Sells the soul of the game for revenue.

The other addresses anything pertaining to the integrity of the game with an iron hand.  As it should be.

I find it refreshing.

Um.  NFL defensive players are paid to injure offensive players.

It's probably not standard procedure, Moranis, for coaches to pay them for injuring players.

I think this penalty is over the top.

Every sport, save for soccer/baseball has gotten too sissy.

The league would argue that defensive players are paid to tackle and otherwise prevent offensive players from scoring.

I agree with you, especially given the culture of the NFL. But the league is trying to change that as surely as the NBA changed the game with the hand check rule change.
