Can we? Yes.

Should we? Yes.

Will he ever reach 50% of his potential?  No.

An injury prone big man? I feel like I've seen this movie before...

I pass.. Why waste a roster spot on a big guy who will just cause us frustration because of injuries yet again.

No point in doing anything this season, but I think offering Oden a contract this offseason would be a great idea.  The team will have a ton of cap space, nobody to spend it on, and will likely be in serious rebuilding mode.  Oden is the perfect project for a team without a lot of good options.

Try to get him with a 2 year semi-guaranteed contract, with a team option for the 3rd.  Something real simple like $1 to $1.5m per year.

So 1st year you know you're not going to get anything from him, maybe a few brief appearances at the end of a lottery bound season if you're lucky.

2nd year you still don't really expect much from him, but hope to at least get him on the court for half a season maybe.

3rd year, if he showed anything at all in the previous 2 years, you have him for an absolute bargain (and hopefully  then the C's would be a young team on the rise).  And if he did show anything, you have his Bird rights too.

It's like investing in a penny stock.  Sure you probably won't recoup your investment, but then there's that 1 in 10 chance your risky investment pays offs many times over.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

He may as well give it a shot with Phoenix and their medical staff.

Would Oden take a guaranteed two year contract at the minimum right now?  If he would, I'd probably extend him that offer, to lock up his rights.  After all, it's not my money.

Exactly.  With somebody else's money I'm thinking "Why not have him in our back pocket just in case we get lucky with his health?"  Well, this armchair GM stuff is played with Monopoly money whereas Danny has to play with Wyc's cash.

Do people really still think he'll be able to play any level of basketball, let alone NBA basketball?

If it is cheap it might be worth it but very low chance of success here.

For the Vet Minimum only.

That way, even if hes injured and out for the season (probably)

we wont really be wasting any money on him, and if he stays healthy for the season and plays well we can sign him to a longer deal.

But yea, only for the minimum.

It's sad that his career has spiraled out of control with all of the injuries. Even when he saw the floor, did he have an impact? I wouldn't know, but bringing him on for the vet minimum would be fine with me.

If Miami's medical staff is as good as JO says they are, maybe it's in Oden's best interest to go there.

This is his only shot in the NBA.

me too...

Would we have to offer him that in the offseason in order to lock him in "long term".  What I mean to say is, how do we secure his rights so that when the min contract runs out he'll still be a restricted free agent.   I wouldnt' want him to suddenly reach his potential and then lose him to a big money contract, because we didn't have his bird rights.

Although, the Knicks apparently have the right to match any offer Lin gets this offseason and they only added him to the roster earlier this season... so how exactly does that rule work?
