thank god we preserve our 25 mil in cap space... just enough to bring back Bass, KG, Ray and Jeff Green (best case scenario).

I don't know what I'd do if my CEltics weren't stuck as a 35-45 win team for the foreseeable future.

What would you have done to make us a contender this year?
Nothing.  I would have gotten a draft pick for Ray and a draft pick for Pierce.  I'd rather start our decade long rebuild with assets in hand than start "later" with nothing.

But if I wanted to at least be competitive in the first round, I'd have traded a 2nd rounder for Kaman.

there is no deal where we could have traded a 2nd for Kaman without giving up one of the big 3

No this is not what we all wanted.

First and foremost, I wanted them to blow it up.

Since they decided not to, they had a responsibility to go all out for it one more time.

Plus if we're sending 4+ players for Kaman they'd have to waive them right? I imagine the league office had no interest in trading Kaman only waive returning players (costing them money) only for a second round pick.

Boy would I love to live in whatever universe you are referring to here.

Let's pick up Dwight Howard in straight cash from the Magic while we're at it.

Bottom line... Boston is a team that CAN NOT compete for a title as currently constructed.  There is very little reason to believe we will have a better shot next year (unless you're taking crazy pills)...

So this deadline was an opportunity to either improve this team in the short-term (trying to get closer to contending) or long-term (setting us up with assets to rebuild).

Instead we did nothing.  That's disappointing.  From Boston's perspective they probably just figure they are better off hoodwinking fans into buying tickets on the false hope of a final run by the "big 3"... they will still make $$$ regardless.  It's just very disappointing as a serious fan of this organization to see how deeply flawed our roster is, how very little assets we hold for the future... and recognizing that nothing positive is coming from this wasted season.

What kind of expiring deals were out there on teams who would be willing to take on those players AND give up a 1st round pick?

I wouldnt take 2nd rounders for those guys.

Plus we can get Kaman without giving any assets up.

I understand your frustration though but I appreciate Ainge's patience right now. I just hope it pays off this offseason.

I am happy they didn't give away future cap space for role players.

Exactly.  I'm glad he didn't mortgage the future on a pipe dream.  This is wha the shoud have done.  I would have liked ot have seen a minor deal, but not if it meant overpaying.  They will pick up another big for the rest of the year and we will see how next year goes.  We will have 2 # 1's and cap room...

I am positive that Ainge explored both of those options and there wasnt anything out there that fit the bill.

Regarding assets for the future, we will have financial flexibility to acquire future assets.

How many teams seamlessly transition without a couple of bridge years?

exactly what possible assets are you talking about getting? in order to trade someone like ray allen, you have to take on salary as well to make the deal work and that makes no sense for the c's in that case. i'd be more angry if DA took back a mediocre player with a dew years on his deal for the sake of making a deal. that's just dumb.

we dont know what was discussed if anything was discussed. i dont think DA is gun shy. i think if there was a deal out there, i assume he would have pulled the trigger.

If they want more late first rounders they can just buy them before the draft. Pierce will still have value, Rondo will still have value. It's not like there was something obvious that they could have done and passed on. World isn't over.

Really? Trade Ray and Pierce FOR DRAFT PICKS? Not even players to rebuild around? THAT'S your idea of rebuilding with assets?

I don't even know if you were serious or not, but how is that not a grand example of trading just to trade?

Another way of looking at it is that he learned from trading Antione for mediocre contracts and late picks the first time: he should've just let him expire for heaven's sake instead of taking on that mess for a late pick.

Clean slate this summer.

Problem with not doing anything is that it WILL NOT pay off this offseason...there isn't SH** on the FA market this coming summer, so what were we saving money for this summer?! 2013 is what we should have been planning for. We screwed the pooch on this deadline. I'm not saying we had to trade any of the core, but we should have tried to work something out for O'Neal, Wilcox, Dooling, Quis, Pav, etc. We needed a few guys and it's glaringly obvious

Yes, they should have traded their terrible and injured players for not terrible and not injured players. Can't believe Ainge didn't think of that!
