UPDATE: ESPN's The Magazine's Chris Broussard chimed in with this Wednesday: "New Orleans is still willing to trade Kaman and will settle for a second-round draft pick at this point. The Hornets are not looking for players in return. Indiana has interest in Kaman."

WOW. If Danny can convince New Orleans to take on enough expiring bum contracts to make this work, this is an absolute no-brainer.

The key part of this rumor is "The Hornets are not looking for players in return.  Indiana has interest in Kaman."

In other words, the Hornets want to save cash on this, and will give him away to a team with cap space.  The C's can't compete with the Pacers on this.

Wouldnt it be extrememly difficult to get Kaman for a second rounder? Whats his salary 11 mil? Even if we traded JO and Wilcox's expiring plus a second rounder we wouldnt be able to get him right?

JO,Wilcox and dooling works

Right, unless they offered up the Clippers pick, but I don't think Danny wants to do that.

The trade does work.

We would have to give up two or more second rounders to make this happen.

Well yeah, if anyone offers a first rounder and expiring contracts, I think its a done deal.  But if all they are getting is a second rounder, I think they will give strong preference to the teams that can just absorb the salary.

The C's could try to make an offer of $3 million to go along with the second rounder.  But I am not sure they would be willing to do that, not only because its a lot of extra money on top of Kaman's salary, but it would also tie the C's hands if they wanted to make a draft day trade, because they couldn't include any cash, now that there is a $3 million per year limit on cash being traded.

Works for whom?  Not for New Orleans.  Why would they take that trade when they could take on no salary and still trade him to the Pacers?

just saying that the salaries would match, not saying NO would do it

Somebody's feeding Broussard a line of bull.  First, there's no way they give up Kaman for just a 2nd rounder.  His contract is up after this season so he's not a salary burden and he's way too valuable.  Second, if they were willing to just take a 2nd rounder, the deal would have been done before Broussard ever heard about it.

The only teams that wouldn't blink at paying a guy like Kaman $14 million (prorated, but still) are all already over the cap.  New Orleans would take a 2nd only if they don't have to take any salary back, which means mostly smaller market teams, who would balk at that paycheck.  Broussard stinks but the idea does make sense.

What you're forgetting is the season is almost 2/3rds over.  Who wouldn't part with a 2nd rounder if all they have to pay is 1/3rd of Kaman's contract?

Here, I highlighted something for you  ;)

And 4-5 million is absolutely meaningful to smaller-market teams, especially for a 25 game rental of a fringe starter like Kaman.  And the Pacers wouldn't even be starting him.

He's a 12/8, legit 7 footer and would start for most teams in the league, even the good ones.  Would Miami rather have Kaman or Joel Anthony?  And 4-5 million is not that meaningful to smaller-market teams, especially when it brings you a guy like Kaman who you might otherwise never get a shot at.  It's not just about selling tickets for the rest of the year.  It's about keeping the fanbase happy and selling tickets for next year too.

Ok...what about something like this?

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7besetb

Boston throws a second rounder to both IND and NO.

Unless Kaman is going to re-up with Indy at the end of the year, we're just talking about a this year fix. Here the Pacers get a J.O. reunion, something they had a little interest in, and a big man for the playoffs (is J.O. going to be healthy by the playoffs?). They also pick up a 2nd rounder and an expiring contract (and PG depth) in Dooling, and they give up NOTHING (or just a trade exception to the Hornets).

Celtics get the big man and only have to part with expirings and two 2nd rounders.

NO gets their 2nd rounder, and only takes on Wilcox, a rotation replacement who makes much less and is done after the year.

Other variations of this are possible, obviously. Does anyone think this might be more valuable to the Pacers than giving up their pick and cap space?
