If we luck out like the Bulls, we could pull a Rose out of the hat. Certainly would be tempted to pull trigger on this one.
What FA are still out there? Howard, Nash, Dwill and Mostly RFA--Lopez Gordon Anderson Mayo Beasley
I think it's worth it, because even if Howard changed his mind on NJ (and boy would that be sad for them.... they are super-obsessed), we could amnesty or trade pieces, we could even do a sign and trade involving Howard and Pierce.
With such a deep draft, and such a glaring need for rebounding, so much cap space, and 3 injured centers.... this deal is one of the few on here that actually sounds credible to me.
With this deal, Hornets would save even more money over what they would with an amnesty next year, not to mention NBA would be forcing Celtics to pay more luxury tax. So I can see them doing this.
If they amnesty Okafor, they will still probably have to pick up 6-10 million of his contract a yyear. So this should make it easier to sell the team. And JO. Wilcox, and Staemer salaries look like they will be insured now. Not to mention last time I checked Hornets had several guys on 10 day contracts, so they could probably create roster space as well.
Makes sense to me, but we'll see.
I think the people agaisnt it aren't realizing how bad the Hornets are...this trade would give us a real shot at acquiring Andre Drummond who is going to be incredibly valuable in this league
How bad the Hornets are has nothing to do with it. They aren't trading their own draft pick. Why do people assume they'd give up their own pick? It makes no sense. They'd be trading the right's to Minnesota's pick.
Right now Minny has the 14 worst record (basically, the last lottery position). That will probably improve with Rubio out, but not much. I can't see Minny falling any lower than 10. Minny has no incentive to tank since they don't own their pick.
The question boils down to this. Is a late lottery pick worth 2 more years of Okafor's cap killing contract?
For me, the answer is only if Howard is traded to a team before the end of the season that he will definitely re-sign with. Otherwise, I'd rather gamble that we could sign Howard, and if not, use our cap space to do some kind of deal like this in the offseason.
