Seriously. Think about it. He gets a lot of criticism for his failure to produce on the offensive end, but does anyone see the way that guy plays defense? And do you see his speed while handling the ball on offense?

This Celtics team is in desperate need of those two particular things.

#1 Speed while handling the ball at the level of a point guard
#2 His defensive abilities.

Defense doesn't get the same degree of respect as offense does. We have always known this to be fact. But anyone thinking it's a good idea to trade someone away that plays defense the way Keyon Dooling does is absolutely out of their mind. And a lot of the problems that plagues this Celtics squad on offense is usually the fact that nobody is quick enough. Take notice of what Dooling makes happen, even as we have our sloppy possessions or we miss shots. He's so quick that it inevitably causes his primary defender to easily get out of position, and then that leads to situations where the defender's teammates are considering helping, and have to look all around the court for possible ways that the celtics will be able to take advantage of dooling's collapsing and disruption of the defense.

In some ways, even Rondo isn't as quick with the ball in the half court offense. Pay very good attention to what dooling does on defense, and what seems to constantly happen to the opposing team's defense when dooling is handling the ball. It makes it much easier for everybody else to get a shot because he's so [dang] quick. If the Celtics traded this guy, they would be making a huge, huge mistake, and I see this clear as day. Hopefully they do as well.

By the way, I am not Keyon Dooling  :D

Ahh, Mr. Dooling, fancy seeing you here on the blog  :P

But in all seriousness I really don't agree with this post. Dooling is having an atrocious shooting year, and while his defense is nice, you can get better D from Bradley as a back-up then you can from Keyon. I don't see the point in keeping him around for anything other than a trade filler.

Here was my response to a post in another thread talking about Dooling's good defense, which equally applies here:

I respectfully disagree.  I haven't been thrilled by his defense; it looks good in short spurts, but it has been inconsistent, and mediocre overall.  Stats back this observation up.  According to Synergy Sports, he ranks 291st in points allowed per possession.  If you look at 82games.com, his Opponent's PER is terrible against PGs and decent against SGs, and his PER differential is the second worst on the team (behind Stiemsma).  His defensive rating is worst on the team, and his defensive +/- is worst, too.  While defensive stats aren't the be-all and end-all, when they uniformly point to a player being a bad defender there's usually something to them.

Add that to his poor shooting and his low assist numbers, and I think the angst is understandable.  So far this year, I think he's been poor, even for a third PG.

Yes.  Dooling has been hindered with injuries.  Bradley, Dooling and Wilcox are our energy guys.  It's OK if they don't make shots, it's to change the tempo of the game when the starters get tired or lazy.

Not sure it would be a huge mistake to include Keyon in a trade, but I am  not as down on him as some.  I thought he shot the ball pretty well early in the year and then was injured. He missed every game but one from early Jan to early feb, and I think he just hasn't got his rhythm back. I think he'll improve his shooting and may help the team at some point.

Re: his D, I guess I am not as impressed as the OP but he has been a decent defender in the past, and I have definitely not noticed his impact with the ball in his hands, but I am willing to watch for it.

I've been a little disappointed in Dooling's defense.  A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Personnel decisions concerning Keyon will never be 'huge'. His impact isn't big enough.

Keyon Dooling isn't half the player I thought he was... I'd trade him for a 2nd round pick in 2020

I had high hopes for him after that Miami explosion but he's done zilch ever since.

I agree,  we should build a team around a unique talent such as  Dooling .

Then we should get rid of Doc and hire Bozo the clown too...

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Won't be a huge mistake because if we do move him he will get us back a big body of some kind.
We also have enough as far as backup guards go right now.
Dooling was looking good but his injuries have really hurt his flow and he has taken a loooong time to get back into things.

He was starting to be a great back up for Rondo but he's barely played in the last 2 months just as the team started to grab its identity. If he can give us decent defense and knock down those three pointers again I'll be happy. If we move him for a big body I'll be happy.
One or the other is better than him warming up Bradley's seat on the pine.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Can't see Dooling being able to provide much more than what either Bradley or Moore can. Move him on if we can get a half decent big man in return.
