I don't see KG retiring...

As much as it hurts me to watch his decline.. How many players his age still play at the level he plays at? He's clearly a shell of his former self. But think about all of the old bigs in the NBA KGs age. They are garbage players that come in because they foul hard and can hit an open 15 footer. KG is still an elite defender, and a guy who can score 20 and rebound 10 on occasion.

He's not what he once was, but he's still really [dang] good. Imagine him on a team at a lesser role.... It's amazing to watch a 36 year old do the things he can still do.

I hope KG doesn't retire.  Great player still; it would be a shame to lose him.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

I really hope KG takes a pay cut and resign for 1 more year! That would be fantastic. If this don't happen i think he will end up with the LA Clippers aslong as Billups becomes healthy again. It makes sense:
- still good friends with Chaunsey Billups
- Clippers are upcomming and contenders which means chance for a ring
- Clippers got some money to spend
- Clippers need improvement at both bench and defense, KG will bring this in a huge way
- He loves living arround LA in Malibu i thought he still got a house there

I don't hope this happens, if he resigns for less with the C's it would be good for us!

I love KG, but if the Celtics are rebuilding, I'd rather watch him play for a championship elsewhere.  No sense in keeping him around if all he's doing is taking minutes that could go to a young player who needs to develop.

I feel the same way about Ray and Paul.

I'd see KG playing like 20-25 mpg next year.  Not enough to get in the way of developing young assets.

Not a big fan of wholesale youth movements, and I don't think Ainge is either.  He went after Karl Malone when we were young and bad. He traded for Gary Payton.

Neither move you reference makes sense for a rebuilding team.  I hope Danny isn't foolish enough to think this team can half-rebuild and half-compete, or reload on the fly by taking veterans other teams don't want.

And yes, 20-25 minutes per game that could go to a player under 30 with upside is absolutely a big deal.

I'd at least hang on to them until you actually have a young player that needs to develop.  In KG's case, you can still theoretically shift his minutes to center if you feel he is blocking Johnson.  I don't think Stiemsma is a talent worthy of being in a team's long-term plans, so I wouldn't be concerned about Garnett taking minutes from him.

If the Celtics don't acquire big contract players, I'd rather sign someone like Garnett rather than Kwame Brown to a one-year $6-7m contract.

I'd rather give playing time to, say, a group of the following:

Bass
JJJ
Stiemsma
Mahinmi (UFA center with upside)
Rookie PF / C
D-league call-up / young castoff (e.g. Tolliver / Randolph)
Green (starting at 3 but playing some at 4)

Is that a bad rotation?  Absolutely!  But that's fine -- even preferable -- if we're rebuilding.  What you want is to give those players the opportunity to prove their strengths and work on their weaknesses.

I'd even be okay with giving playing time to a veteran (closer to 30 than 35), as long as they are a contributor we could potentially keep around for multiple years -- Wilcox, for example.  But giving big minutes to a one-year at a time guy like KG at the end of his career makes no sense to me.

I'd love to have him around for JJJ tutor and then when he retires make him defensive coach and big man developer

It would be not at all shocking and probably should be expected (assuming KG doesn't retire, and I've seen nothing that suggests he will) that Garnett will still be a better player than Wilcox three years from now.

I'm not against them coming back but it would have to be after we renounced the rights to them so we were able to free up the money linked to their cap holds.

They'd be good players to bring off the bench for reasonable money but I think the days of relying on them to provide heavy minutes as starters has come to an end (at least if you expect them to be consistently productive)
