I want him.  He'd be a great fit for this team.  Fill the role we had picked out for David West.

Dallas is misusing him as a 3/4 off the bench with a crowded frontcourt pushing him to the perimeter.  Here he'd play the 4/5 for 30+ per game.

I want him too, especially of the cost is not too high.  It would be great if we could get him after a buyout.

If he is bought out, and he truly wants to play for Boston, and he is willing to take the vet min (all the Cs would have to offer for him), then it is a no brainer. I'm not worried about him killing any chemistry the Cs might have (they don't have any) or about him not being 6th man of the year material (he doesn't look like he will). But this is the economist's equivalent of a $20 bill lying on the ground for the taking.

I don't see why Dallas would buy him out.  He's had a rough year, but I'm sure he could still fetch an expiring contract and a pick.  The guy was a borderline all-star last year, his contract is very flexible and he's only 32.  And everyone in the NBA, including his coach, can see that he's being played out of position.

If I was running the C's I'd be offering JO/Daniels and the Clips pick for Odom.  Gives Dallas a more reliable 5 to back-up Haywood (they were interested in JO in the potential David West deal, I believe) and the Clips pick recoups the trade of their own pick to LA.

I wouldn't give up the Clips pick. Didn't Dallas give up a second rounder for him? I'd give a second or future first, but nothing more (along with JO).

He's still Lakers scum to me, so I'd  rather have Beasley if the asking prices are remotely similar. Odom has been terrible and there is no guarantee he's gonna get better. Maybe he wants to come here and shove it to LA and play with a chip on his shoulder, we'll see. But Beasley has much more upside moving forward.

Dallas gave up their 1st rounder and a trade exception to get him.

We might be able to low-ball them given how poorly Odom has played.  Still, Odom is 32, he's a proven top 4 player on a championship team, his contract is reasonable & flexible, he's a big man, there are some understandable/addressable reasons for his struggles (coming in out of shape, playing out of position, playing a reduced role)... He's going to have some value.

what would be the incentive for odom (assuming he gets cut) to want to come play for boston?

he wouldnt put us over the top as a serious contender. i think he would take us from a first round exit to a second round exit.

Well there's already rumblings out there that he'd like to transfer his father to one of Boston's hospitals, which as we know are the best in the country.  That's how Derek Fisher almost signed here in 2007.

Well with the way Odom has played this year, he won't have any impact at all.

Yeah, I don't think Odom is going to get back to looking like "himself" anytime this season.  I think he'll look a lot better next season, though.  I don't buy that he's done as a high impact player.  I think he's just one of a number of vets who were really thrown off by the lockout (our own Paul Pierce is one of them).

Minutes, role, profile.

In Dallas, he's averaging 7th/8th man minutes, and splitting his time between the 3 and the 4 spots.

In Boston he would be starting, playing 30+ minutes and seeing all of his minutes at the 4/5 - the role he was so successful in with LA.  And for all of Boston's struggles this year, they are still very high profile.  You do well in Boston and the rest of the league will take notice.

Could Odom fill Jeff Green role as a do it all 3/4 ball handling inside & outside big. He is the 1 option in the whole league who could do a Jeff G impression & probably a little better. And motivation would be to stick the Lakers where it hurts most helping a hated rival. But only contingent on No big 4 member being dealt.

No, that's a misuse of Lamar.  He's a big man.  He's best defensively and offensively at the 4.  He was the de facto starting power forward for back to back championship teams.

K...

Lakers get:  Dwight Howard, Turkaglu and Jameer Nelson
Raptors get:  JO expiring, Brandon Bass, Dooling Expiring and probably draft picks from Boston
Orlando gets:  Rondo and Bynum
Celtics get:  a Spanish infusion of Pau Gasol and Jose Calderon

Then we sign Odom to fill the 6th man role.

Then and only then do I consider the Celtics a contender.  Until then, blow it up.  Trade everyone for young prospects and draft picks.

I don't like losing Bass. He's been just so good for us this year. I wish we had him over Davis the past couple years. He just works well around KG, Paul and Rondo.

I agree in theory, but Bass actually hasn't been much better than Baby this year offensively - EDIT: I should say worse than Baby was for us (Baby this year has been awful).  He's having his worst statistical year, in terms of efficiency, since he broke out in Dallas.  Missing around the rim, getting to the free throw line less, having his worst year on the offensive boards.
