Greg Oden possibly being waived

With Oden being waived and us "possibly" sending Rondo/Oneal for Gasol, we would have a free roster spot. The first priority would be to get a PG, but if not, Oden wouldn't be a bad pickup. He's out all this season but if he came back next year to us because DA showed faith in picking him up, he could be just what we need.

He won't be ready to really play for 10-12 months after his most recent microfracture surgery. Still young though so worth a gamble if it's really cheap when he's ready again.

Until he can prove he can be both healthy and effective, I would not offer him anything more than an MLE level contract and even that I think is overpaying.

He just had another microfracture surgery.  Someone might give it to him, but I wouldn't even give him the MLE without a real good reason to think he is healthy.

i dont know if it has to do with being a Bostonian, but i show pride in our hospitals...

we have one of the best if not BEST doctors in the world in Tufts Medical and BMC...

Teams might pass on Oden cuz his injuries, but I think we should give him a chance...hes young and in the games he played in the NBA he looked dominant...

If he can come here, I trust our doctors can fix him up better

"Fixing up" a guy in doctor's terms is to try and get a person back to a state where they can live a normal life style (ie be able to walk up and down stairs and without pain).  Getting a person to be able to play at an elite level, in a contact and very athletic sport is an entirely different world.  Ask Brandon Roy.

Yet another tough break (no pun intended) for Portland.  Could you have imagined telling them 5 years ago that both Roy and Oden would be out of the league due to injuries by 2011?  Depressing.  I'd be shocked if Oden plays again.

While its a tough break, I certainly don't feel bad for Portland.  Oden is tough, because while he had red flags, he didn't seem like a huge risk when they drafted him, but everyone knew Roy's injury risk, and they benefited from taking a chance on him...and then ultimately had to pay the piper.

Yeah, the guy is 24 years old and has earned $23 million in salary, plus endorsements.  Hopefully he got himself a good financial advisor, and he can start spending his life doing something that he enjoys more than playing basketball (and something he definitely enjoys more than constantly rehabbing to play basketball.)

have to agree -- this would make a lot of sense.  if there was any hope of this guy playing in a year or two, they'd hang on to him.

Greg Oden has passed Micheal Olowakandi in being the biggest bust in the history of the NBA. Turns out winning the 2007 lottery was the biggest booby trap in the history of the NBA.

We fell into our booby trap of trading Perkins but we should not fall into another by picking up Greg Oden and giving him a contract only to pay for his rehab.

I wonder aloud if Semih Erden is available.

Hes played like 60 games in three years... I stay away from him unless we get him for a vet min or something like a late second round pick...
