We have a ton of cap space and 2 first round picks this off-season. The rebuild will occur but not till the season is over.

yup, the article on the front page said it best...we are in a position most "rebuilding" teams would love to be in.

we've got 2 1'st round picks, alot of capspace, and 2 allstar players

assuming we continue to be horrible, theres no point to blow it up we'll end up with a top 15pick anyways..in a loaded draft

You know what? I'll be so happy when this team is 5-26 next year so that everyone who jumped on the bandwagon when this team got Garnett and Allen will leave. How many rebuild threads are there on here? All of them disregard any notion of getting D-Will or Howard and instead have the Celtics in salary cap hell saddled with bad contracts but with extra draft choices in the late teens early 20s...of course this makes perfect sense for any team. If you think this is misery then the OP obviously didn't sit through games at the Garden from the mid 90's until 2008.

EDIT: Oh and 70% of them have the Celtics giving up Rondo and others for Big Al. The same Big Al that is very defensively limited!

cap space means nothing if no one wants to play here... and we can get more than 2 first round picks and a better overall pick if we begin the rebuild now

I've seen this point thrown around constantly...where is the proof? Has any player gone on record and said that "I will not play in Boston". The Celtics have never signed a major free agent...sure but that is because, Gaston owned this team the last time they had cap space. Gaston for most of the people here who don't know used to own the Celtics before Wyc and company. He made Donald Sterling look like Donald Trump.

Especially for some of the lousy trades that people mention on here...

he also saddled us with horrible contracts that crippled the team..it took Ainge 5years to clear everything out.

we havent really experienced having an off-season with alot of capspace and solid management/ownership in Ainge/Wyc...usually good front offices lead to teams making smart decisions and remaining competitive

Danny is going to stay Put IMO...hes not going to trade for 50cents on the dollar just because..

Look lets be real guys this is awful... every game is awful... I don't care if we're healthy or not we're clearly not contending this year...

Lets just begin the rebuild in the next few weeks... please just do it, its the best option. Try to get some picks for guys like allen/kg, or whatever you can do. Tank the season, lets get as many picks as we can in this draft and just rebuild it.

Tanking now will set us up perfectly to contend as soon as possible with a huge overhaul (not to mention we're practically tanking every game now anyway). Keep Pierce though for veteran leadership next year..

If we had Rondo and Bass we wouldn't be down by 20+

So not losing by 20+ is an accomplishment now?

LOL only Celtics fans..... ::)

Never said that. Probably should of said "Game would have been much closer if Rondo or Bass were here". Stop putting words in my mouth.

He absolutely did...but he did it in a way so he didn't have to splurge in free agency. For example, the best case was that Gaston ordered Chris Wallace to make the Vin Baker deal after nixing an offer Wallace was going to make for Rodney Rodgers who they had picked up in a midseason trade earlier. In return Gaston orders Wallace to cut payroll for 2002 while hes trying to sell the team. Wallace goes about and trades Kenny Anderson Joe Forte and Vitally Potapenko for Vin Baker and Jack Daniels.

Gaston made sure that his teams never exceeded the soft cap so that he could collect the luxury tax revenue. That was the thing he had terrible contracts on the books but it was 4 or 5 at once instead of the usual 1-2 big ones most bad teams have.

Who did we trade for Rodney Rodgers...a promising young rookie named Joe Johnson.

So trading the players that are keeping things close and getting very low first round picks for them will relieve your misery?

Getting picks which Danny hasn't shown he is so great at using to find even NBA talent never mind elite talent will end your misery?

Seeing Stiemsma, Moore and JJJ play more and look lost playing big minutes while losing by 30 points a night will make you feel better?

Don't know about anyone else but the Celtics losing by even more points a game and looking more pathetic this year and in the next many years is not something I'm looking forward to.

Couldn't have summed it up any better. TP

KG said the same thing and he came here and loved it. Money has a way of making people change their minds.

Ainge made a good chunk of that cap mess himself.  He seems to have learned his lesson, though.

Aren't we already doing that?

Well, I can certainly appreciate that.  I just view it as a necessary evil, though.  We're going to have to go through rebuilding some time, why not sooner rather than later, so long as what we're doing right now isn't exactly very exciting or entertaining?

Early in this season the main reason to not dive right into rebuilding was that we could still see this group of older players put it together and play some really great basketball sometimes, albeit maybe not as often as in previous seasons.  In the last month or so, those performances have been kind of rare.

At this point, the main reason not to blow it up immediately is probably just lack of good ways to do so.

That said, staying the course might not be so bad.  There's isn't a big difference -- in terms of drafting -- between getting the 7th or 8th seed and dropping a few spots lower than that.

I think there's a good chance we'll get to see some exciting performances from this group in at least a few games down the stretch and into the playoffs, if they make it that far.  Then we'll get to start the rebuilding process, like it or not, once the off-season begins.
