it's really simple when you look at it:

KG plays good or great / we win easy or big

KG plays average or poorly / we are in a nail-biter or we lose

i don't think you can say that about rondo, pp or ray...

it seems like over the last 5 years we have lost a lot of close games even when rondo, pp or ray plays good or great...

i can hardly remember losing when KG plays good or great...

i always remember Doc telling KG to get 20 shots in the game...

i'm not completely advocating that now but you get my point...

I think you can say it about Pierce, who really has been the catalyst for this team this year.  But I don't disagree that they need KG to play well to win games.  Particularly since they have so few impact players up front, they need him to be that guy.

Paul makes the offense run.

KG makes the defense run.

Need both.

Pierce has been important as our best offensive weapon, but I think KG is the catalyst of our recent success, unless you credit Pierce with our defensive revival.

The key is for 2 of the big 4 to play well and less than 2 of them to play poorly.  99% of the time it's about how they play, and only one of them can carrying the team to victory doesn't happen all too often (usually it's Ray or Rondo).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Speaks the truth.  We shouldn't look to trade anyone until we know for sure we cannot beat these "elite" teams.  If it so happens that we are unable to prove ourselves until late in the season, so be it.  At this point we need to take our chances with the current group because they have proven in the past that they can turn it on when it counts the most (provided the bench does its part and we are healthy).

Pierce is only gonna get healthier (barring another injury).

KG is just plain fun to watch when he is all wound up  ;D    The result is usually a bad evening for the other team.

I was hoping DA Black Mamba or Metta Brain Cramp would have mouthed off by now on the Celtics. KG just feeds of  trash talk from the opposition.

I'd have KG drink about 3 Red Bulls right before the LA game.  ;D   LoL

agreed -- If everyone's on their game and playing focussed basketball, they can beat anyone.  They can even survive against anyone if one of Ray, PP or KG is having an off night shooting as long as they play focussed D and play smart offense (i.e. limited turnovers).

Rondo is the key. He limits a lot of what we do on

offense because of.his lack of a jumshot and being able to take over.a game scoring wise.

He needs to compensate for.that by doing everything else pretty perfect If Rondo isnt running this team and offense close to perfect than it really limits his impact on the game.

At KGs worst he still plays great defense and.can hit the open jumper in pick and roll

While I remember losing games where KG played great, I still think there is a valid point in the OP. The reason is that the probability of KG performing poorly is relatively high due to his physical condition. Not only is there the lingering minor injury and sketchy joints problem, but there is also the loss of explosiveness that makes it really hard for him to finish near the rim this season.

On days he is feelings spry, he can really impact a game. On days he is not so spry, it can be tough to watch.

I PP is the key.
Pierce is more of a constant than a variable. So this comes down to what we are referring to as 'key'. If everyone was as consistent as Pierce, I would think we would be better able to forecast our success. But KG is such a big variable.

This! Pierce and KG.
