So...if we keep the old timers for their presumed last hurrah, and it seems the rookies are all developing alongside them and each other quite well.

But we look pretty awful at Center.  Wilcox is coming around nicely, but I like him better at PF than C, and his contract is less than Bass (and I wanted an all of the above option).  JO is perhaps part of the "last hurrah" group of Old-4.

So that leaves these vet bench players as possible trade bait or salary matches.  Who can we simply live without?

I vote for each, plus all of the above.

You?

Hang on to Bass and Dooling because the only other options behind them are Bradley, Moore and JJJ.  C's need some experience off that bench and those 2 provide it.  Quisy and Sasha can be replaced by Pietrus.  No one would take them in a deal unless the other team was cutting salary so I'd see them more as options to be cut to pick up a waived player later.

I'd let Bass go and use Wilcox to back up KG.  Bass isn't a keeper, and Wilcox is better inside by a mile.

Bass' $4M would combine nicely with Dooling's $2.5 and the Clips' pick for Sideshow Bob.

Rondo/Bradley/Moore
Pietrus/Ray
Pierce/Pavlovic
KG/Wilcox
Varejao/JO/Steimsma

The expendable players are Daniels, Dooling, and Stiesma... they currently are pretty much out of the rotation and only serve us for insurance purposes. I expect any of them to be cut as buyout candidates come forward.

What does Bass give that can't be replaced by Wilcox backing up KG?

you both beat me to it.  Bass has been our most consistent scorer off the bench.  As much as Sideshow Bob would help, I would hesitate to move Bass for him.  I'd try like hell to move other pieces with expiring contracts and a pick this year.

And these are the reasons he's on the expendable list, IMO:

He's a jump shooter, not what I'm looking for in a PF...

off the bench, which makes him immediately available in trade for a Center...

and he's been consistent-to-dropped off a bit, not getting better as the team comes together.

So I'd keep the better inside player and big, who happens to also be cheaper and able to both run the floor and/or play backup C in a pinch:  Wilcox

And JJJ would benefit from spot minutes, too.  Clearing Bass makes room for JJJ to play now and then.

Bradley/Moore could switch out offense/defense backing up Rondo, but either looks competent for 10-15 minutes/game.

Pietrus will back up both Ray and Paul, but Pavlovic and Quisy are just minimum contracts, and they're good to have for that.

Wilcox is rounding into shape as a solid 3rd big, and another rotation C (ahead of JO and Steimsma) is the point of expending the expendibles...

therefore

The veterans making more than minimum, Bass+Dooling, could be this year's deadline trade unless they start looking much better than they've been/are.

I will go one step further and simply call him our most consistent player this year.

I'm different in that I want a PF who can make a jump shot.  I think that Ainge loves the idea of a stretch four and I think Doc likes the concept, too.  If you're looking for an old-school, post-up power forward so the Celtics can just pound the ball inside, I think you're going to be disappointed for as long as Doc and Danny are running the show.  If Ainge chased a restricted free agent in the off-season, it might be Ryan Anderson instead of Javale McGee.

You could easily propose an argument that Bass has been our most consistant player all year. He has done everything he has asked and more out of his role... Why trade him? And how would he be expendable... That makes no sense.

Gerald Henderson started on a title team, then was traded for a future draft pick.

Yet Brandon Bass, a backup to an allstar starter, with two backups farther behind him (Wilcox and JJJ), isn't expendable?

Not fair for Dooling since hes been injured. Bench should still be:

Dooling/Bradley
Bradley/moore
Pietrus
Bass
Wilcox

Quis and Pavlovic will only be useful if ray or pierce sit so as not to over play pietrus/moore/bradley. Same goes for KG/JO/Bass with Steamer.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Bass is one of the few bench players who can flat out score so why get rid of him? He plays hard every night and has been huge for the C's.

Since Posey and P.J. Brown left there hasn't been a consistent player who gives us a scoring threat off the bench night in and night out like Bass and Pietrus. Sorry, I rather keep him and maybe add another center around the deadline then lose one of the bigs who is playing great for us.

Plus we don't have many big men so what makes ANY big expendable is beyond me.
