Don't need to break up Amare and Melo ... just need to build a supporting cast that complements Amare and Melo better than the current Knicks' supporting cast does.
A little more playmaking, more depth and a better head coach.
D'Antoni isn't the issue. And I wouldn't support sacking a proven winner that still has his players' loyalty. He does need a true point guard to run his offense. Whether that point guard is Jeremy Lin remains to be seen.
D'Antoni should have been fired the second they made that trade for Carmelo Anthony last year.
He is a roster specific coach who has proven himself incapable of maximizing that team's collection of talent. Both when Billups was there and this season with Tyson Chandler.
The Knicks would be better off with a JVG type ... someone who can better harness the Knicks collective defensive and rebounding potential.
I agree D'Antoni is a one system coach, then again so is eventual replacement, Phil Jackson, and there are a half a dozen guys who haven't even gotten that far. Del Negro anybody?
And despite his reputation, Mike D has got the Knicks playing solid defense this season. Anyway, I'm sceptical that a team built around STAT and Melo would have a reasonable chance of cracking the top 5-6 defensively, even with a Van Gundy at the helm.
