Denver might have traded Melo to NJ, but he flatly said he wasn't re-signing there. I don't think he would have either. Deron Williams is proving that nobody can be bullied into signing a contract they genuinely don't want to sign.

I don't think you're recalling correctly, at least not the denouement. Towards the end, it was pretty obvious that Melo was saying he flat out would resign with NY, but wouldn't with NJ, and NJ was saying they'd call his bluff. They lied.
EDIT: You are right though in some ways, for a really long time Melo either no-commented it, or was vaguely 'focusing on basketball'. Only at the end was it leaked that he said he flat out 'wouldn't sign anywhere but NY'.
