Would trades like this make Boston more attractive to Howard?

Boston trade Ray and Pierce

Receives Deng, George, Gibson and a 1st from Chicago.


Chicago trade Deng, Gibson and a 1st

Receives Pierce.  (Pierce gives them a number 2 scorer that will not disappear in the playoffs like a Boozer while keeping a high level of defense)

Pacers trade George

Receives Ray.  (adds an extra offensive spark and leadership that has been all the way to the top)




Would a team of Rondo, George, Deng, Gibson be a good starting point to attract Howard to Boston?

Neither Chicago or Indiana make those trades.

No I don't think at all. I think you would need legit star power and none of those guys have it and I think itd be a very tough to even make a case that 1 of them could have it.

Unless for some reason we rip through the league at that point which id doubt happening.

Anyway I don't see how it would be possible for howard to go to free agency anyway. How and why would orlando let that happen?

Agreed.  Howard is going to want and need a proven winner (Pierce). I don't think he'll want to come here if Pierce is traded.

I don't think Indiana and Chicago will do this.

With that said, this is just me. But Howard ain't coming here unless we get ANOTHER superstar. We only have 20+ mil cap room, we won't be able to afford two max contracts. I just dont get the fascination with Dwight. Aside from his defense, Cousins and Hawes can do his double-double nights. He's not unstoppable either, unlike Shaq. Hawes and Cousins can play decent defense too, and won't be as expensive. I'd rather have either one of the two than Howard. With Pierce, Rondo, Ray and a really good 6th man in Bass, Hawes or Cousins will make us contenders, for cheaper. Hard to get Cousins though, but not impossible. Hawes is FA. Dwight won't be here.

I've mentioned Josh Smith before...I just don't think we could afford him, Dwight, Paul and Rondo, though .

Josh Smith, Dwight (and KG returning on a discount??) would effectively shut down Boston's painted area to our foes for many years to come.

Rondo as 1st line of defense...J Smoove and Dwight as Goalkeepers?

Agreed.  Howard is going to want and need a proven winner (Pierce). I don't think he'll want to come here if Pierce is traded.

I believe Howard is looking to the future and sees Pierce as too old to be central to that.  I presume he knows and wants the winning formula: two in-their-prime All-Stars to go along with himself as a superstar.  Otherwise he'd have been interested in Boston in December, when it was a year earlier and they already had Pierce and Rondo in place.

But I agree with the other observers here that trading Pierce (and Ray) for simply 'good' players isn't the answer either.  Whether it's through trade or FA, DH needs to see another top player in the C's future.  That's what leads to the possible extremely peculiar possibility of Danny amnestying Pierce, while he's still a borderline All-Star, if such a third player were to become available.
