ESPN just came up with this one:
Somehow Denver has become the clear winner of the Danilo Gallinari (formerly Carmelo Anthony) trade. By our projections, the Nuggets have the fifth-best championship odds in the NBA right now. If they can add some defense, they could become the Western Conference favorite.
Needs: A big man to pair with Nene, preferably one who can add a defensive presence. Timofey Mozgov looks good on posters, but the problem is that he's on the wrong end of them.
Assets: Rudy Fernandez and Arron Afflalo are quality starting shooting guards, and they're young. Mozgov and Kosta Koufos are big and young, while Andre Miller adds a nice expiring contract. Denver even has an extra 2014 first-round draft pick it can deal.
The trade: Miller, Arron Afflalo and Mozgov to Boston for Kevin Garnett.
During the regular season, Garnett might not be able to run with the Nuggets, but once the playoffs roll around his defense, rebounding and leadership would be a huge help. His diminishing offensive game wouldn't be a problem for George Karl -- it's still far better than what Mozgov provides. Afflalo's shooting would pair well with Rajon Rondo and would be missed in Colorado, but you can't get one of the Big Three for free.
Anderson Varejao would provide a cheaper alternative if "The Big Ticket" proves too expensive.
I disagree with two things here: 1) That Varejao would cost less than Garnett to acquire, and 2) that Denver would consider trading Afflalo in exchange for KG.
If they would, I'd be there to answer the phone....
