Call me crazy but I don't want any of these trades. An in-shape Pierce is still a top 5 SF, and he embodies the organization. I see him being productive enough for the rest of his 2.5 year-contract.
Him, Rondo, Green, Bass, the organization, the coach, the rookies, and the 2 first-rounders will go a long way in attracting free agents with the ridiculous amount of cap space the Celtics have.
Pierce should retire a Celtic for more than symbolic reasons. They need him for retooling the team.
Moving forward on a rebuilding team (make no mistake, this will be a rebuilding team after this season, if not at some point this season), all that Paul Pierce does is help the team win games and take up a bunch of minutes at the small forward position.
Neither of those things is in line with the objectives of a rebuilding team; we want to be in line for top draft picks, and we want those minutes going to somebody who can be a trade asset or potentially a building block long term
In the last few years of his career, Paul Pierce can still bring a lot to the table. However, other than veteran leadership, none of those things fits with the objectives of a rebuilding team.
As for veteran leadership, the Celtics can get that from players who won't want to play big minutes, who won't eat up $15 million in cap space, and who won't help the team win when winning is contrary to our best interests.
I think moving forward, if we are going to commit to rebuilding around Rondo, it makes sense to make clear that he is THE leader of this team to all of the new young players coming in. It might be difficult to do that if Paul Pierce is still around for a couple of years.
I'm trying to be as impartial as possible (because I love Paul Pierce and would hate to see him in another uniform), but it's difficult for me to see really good reasons for keeping Paul Pierce other than sentimental value and keeping the fan base happy and interested.
