Before the year started, ATL WAS considering moving Smith for a center or another capable guard and moving Horford to fulltime PF. Makes sense if they could do that, Smith also has expressed interest in Boston, so a deal of Allen/KG/Pierce to ATL for Smith would actually make sense. ATLs GM has coveted both Allen and KG. As for Gay and Granger, I'd take Gay. Young, athletic, and can score. Granger is a good player, but he's 29/30 years old already. I wouldn't like the deal for Martin, he's a SG and isn't known as a tough defender. Also a 29-30 year old player. Hill is an interesting big, as is Patterson. I can't see Utah trading anyone but Milsap or Jefferson. Kanter is their future and I doubt Pierce would be enough to get him. Very interesting possibilities though. Rather wouldn't give up Pierce though...

The only Pierce trade that makes sense is one that takes back expiring contracts + young player on his rookie contract and/or 1st round draft picks.

Pierce at this point in his career is better than every guy mentioned in that list, but we'd be stuck paying them the same money we'd be stuck paying Pierce for the next two years.  Makes more sense just to hang onto Pierce than downgrade to an overpaid player who isn't as good as Pierce.

EDIT:  By those qualifications, the "Enes Kanter and a 2012 1st round pick" would be the only trade that makes sense.  I'm not sure how Utah would match the rest of Paul's salary, though.

I don't like losing Pierce, but I would go for Gay. I can see him and Rondo rocking and they are easy players to build around.

4. I can't see Utah trading away a building block in Kanter plus the pick. Millsap, maybe. Does he become the Celtics' C of the future, or part of the PF rotation with Bass?
Bass is likely to opt out of his player option at just $4 and Millsap is a better player. So I'd view him as our PF going forward.

I'd definitely want a pick or Kanter over Millsap.

Depends on the pick.  I love Millsap. The biggest reason why Utah is doing so well this year, IHMO.  Playing like a souped-up David West.  Only $8 mil next year, allowing us to maximize our cap space.

Don't think Utah would trade him for Pierce though.  Doesn't make them much better.  Doesn't fit the timeline of their young guys.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

i think bass might stay around, he's getting great minutes now, is a fan favorite and should be ablie to see the starting pf job is coming available soon enough

Call me crazy but I don't want any of these trades. An in-shape Pierce is still a top 5 SF, and he embodies the organization. I see him being productive enough for the rest of his 2.5 year-contract.

Him, Rondo, Green, Bass, the organization, the coach, the rookies, and the 2 first-rounders will go a long way in attracting free agents with the ridiculous amount of cap space the Celtics have.

Pierce should retire a Celtic for more than symbolic reasons. They need him for retooling the team.

Bench Jeff Green (5 million), Bass, and fillers
Can we please end the Jeff Green nonsense already?

Why? Green apparently enjoys the city and is said to be around the team. If Ainge brought back Daniels, with his spinal issues, and West, with his legal problems, why wouldn't he consider bringing back Green for the right price?

Where do I start?

First, there is no telling whether he'll be ready for next season. If he's in a condition where "being able to play again" is a good news, I'm skeptical.

Second, there's no telling whether he'll be back with the Celtics. He's an UFA.

Third, even if he is ready for the season and chooses to come back with the Celtics, there's no telling how many minutes he'll be able to play.

So yeah, pegging him as a major piece in the starting lineup or the bench is premature at best, and complete nonsense at worst.

I don't see how it's any more premature or nonsensical than most of the trade rumors, hopes for max players, or desires for RFA's that appear on this board.  Considering that a) most stories from the time before his surgery said he'd be able to play next year, and that no reports have said anything went slightly wrong with his surgery, and b) he's a UFA with an actual relationship with the Celtics, it seems much less nonsensical than most of the stuff that appears on this board.  Furthermore, the Celtics have given every indication that they would like to re-sign him next year.  Will he be here?  Obviously no one knows, but if you had to bet on one player currently not on the Celtics wearing Green next year, you'd be a fool not to bet on Jeff Green.

My guess is that you don't like Jeff Green, for whatever reason.  But that isn't a good reason to call posts "nonsense" when they project Jeff Green as a member of the Celtics for next season.

Espn*** just showed the top Pierce trade offers around the league:

1. Atlanta Hawks for PF Josh Smith
2. Memphis Grizzlies for SF Rudy Gay
3. Indiana Pacers for SF Danny Granger
4. Utah Jazz for Paul Millsap and pick, or Enes Kanter and 2012 draft pick
5. Houston Rockets for Kevin Martin and Patrick Patterson/Jordan Hill

If we want to truly Rebuild, Fill our Biggest need at Center w/ a young good prospect Enes Kanter. Get another Draft pick to go with our other 2 (Clippers and Celtics) and Draft High Potiential Prospects, more Big men and and Guards. Patch up whatever we don't get in the draft in Free Agency, with our Big Cap Room....Build around Rondo and Green.

Lets see a roster example for 2013:

PG Rondo/Clips pick/Moore
SG Utah pick/Pietrus/Bradley
SF Green/Celtic pick/some old vet (Antoine Walker comeback???)
PF Bass/Mohamed/Johnson
C  Kaman/Kanter/Turiaf

Thats what I want for next year, opinions?

Moving forward on a rebuilding team (make no mistake, this will be a rebuilding team after this season, if not at some point this season), all that Paul Pierce does is help the team win games and take up a bunch of minutes at the small forward position.

Neither of those things is in line with the objectives of a rebuilding team; we want to be in line for top draft picks, and we want those minutes going to somebody who can be a trade asset or potentially a building block long term

In the last few years of his career, Paul Pierce can still bring a lot to the table.  However, other than veteran leadership, none of those things fits with the objectives of a rebuilding team.

As for veteran leadership, the Celtics can get that from players who won't want to play big minutes, who won't eat up $15 million in cap space, and who won't help the team win when winning is contrary to our best interests.

I think moving forward, if we are going to commit to rebuilding around Rondo, it makes sense to make clear that he is THE leader of this team to all of the new young players coming in.  It might be difficult to do that if Paul Pierce is still around for a couple of years.

I'm trying to be as impartial as possible (because I love Paul Pierce and would hate to see him in another uniform), but it's difficult for me to see really good reasons for keeping Paul Pierce other than sentimental value and keeping the fan base happy and interested.

I don't like trading Pierce for many reasons, but the biggest is.

If the C's are going to rebuild they need more than Rondo to teach the young talent. Pierce will still be able to compete and start next year, year after who knows but he would at worst be a darn good bench player.

I say if any of the 3 gets traded it would be Allen with the hope he comes back from his half year rental with Say the Bulls and becomes a one year mentor.

KG is a hard contract to move, he'll most likely be the last to go. But I'd love him to be around if in FA with some Red Luck we land Love, KG would be  agood mentor for him.

This is how they did it back in the day. Keep some vets to mentor the young bucks coming up behind them.

Im not sure what DA will be able to get for any one. Wouldn't make sense to trade just to get a hair better.

How about not trading Pierce for a backup center. And then instead of putting all the chips in the draft odds, why not use the cap space to sign 2 top FA's?

Rondo, Dooling/Bradley
Eric Gordon, Pietrus
Pierce, Green
Josh Smith, Bass
Kaman, Scrub
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.
