BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS: BLOW UP THE CELTICS

The Celtics' core started from such a high place that all through the erosion of their collective skills, they've remained a contender. It was inevitable that the day would come that this no longer the case. Folks, that day has arrived, and Ainge indeed needs to blow up this roster. One thing to keep in mind is that no matter what happens the rest of this season, the Celtics have almost no committed salary beyond this season except for Pierce and Rajon Rondo. So even if no attractive trade opportunities come Ainge's way, he's still going to be able to hit the reset button next summer. Starting over isn't easy. Trades and payrolls are restricted in so many ways by the league's collective bargaining agreement that it can be a painstaking process. For example, it's easy to think of reasons why Allen would be a coveted asset. He's in the last year of a contract that will pay him $10 million this season, and his ability to play off the ball and hit a high percentage from the outside would fit great on any contender in the league.

INSIDER: THE FIVE BEST TRADES FOR PAUL PIERCE

If Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge wants to begin the rebuilding process in earnest, he should start with trading Pierce and getting good value in return. Pierce's contract is relatively friendly; he is owed about $48 million through 2014. Pierce appears to be close to fully recovered, so it behooves Ainge to trade him while Pierce's value holds and before another injury befalls the 34-year-old small forward. Though most of these trades might entail including other ancillary players, here are the central pieces to five trades that best fit Pierce and the Celtics.

The five swaps suggested in the Insider article:

    1. Atlanta Hawks for PF Josh Smith
    2. Memphis Grizzlies for SF Rudy Gay
    3. Indiana Pacers for SF Danny Granger
    4. Utah Jazz for Paul Millsap and pick, or Enes Kanter and 2012 draft pick
    5. Houston Rockets for Kevin Martin and Patrick Patterson/Jordan Hill

Some of this has been gone over before on CB, but some hasn't had much play. What do you guys think of any or all of what's in these two items?
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

I think to be a championship contender we need a big free agent to sign this year.  to be a better playoff team for the future we need to trade pierce this year.  to win a championship in 3 years we need to blow it up except for rondo and acquire as many assets (picks, prospects, etc).

Grainger, Gay, and Smith are the only ones I would want because of their youth and skill level but we will still need another piece because then we would only have a big 2 in rondo and grainger, gay, smith.  How does that sound to have one of those three in your Big 3?

Don't like any in a trade for Pierce.

The only one here I definitely wouldn't touch would be Kevin Martin. Makes the big bucks but is one of the worst defenders in the league - he wouldn't be able to stay on the court against LeBron or other young wings and expect us to survive. And no pick with it?

Smith, Gay and Granger are all younger talent worth a look.

Don't like Millsap that much, he's good but not great for the money. But Kanter and 1st rounder are interesting pieces. I like Kanter a lot as a potential better-than-Perk future C. Kid can play.

    1. Atlanta Hawks for PF Josh Smith
    2. Memphis Grizzlies for SF Rudy Gay
    3. Indiana Pacers for SF Danny Granger
    4. Utah Jazz for Paul Millsap and pick, or Enes Kanter and 2012 draft pick
    5. Houston Rockets for Kevin Martin and Patrick Patterson/Jordan Hill

1. Makes no real sense for Atlanta. Who plays PF for them? Also, Atlanta ownership will not trade younger and cheaper for older and more expensive.

2. I don't see Memphis trading Gay for Pierce. Why would they?

3. Why does Indiana trade younger and cheaper for older and more expensive?

4. I can't see Utah trading away a building block in Kanter plus the pick. Millsap, maybe. Does he become the Celtics' C of the future, or part of the PF rotation with Bass?

5. I could see that trade happening, depending on the piece(s) that go to Boston with Martin.

I would take any of those trades except for Millsap, I just dont see him as much more of a building block then Bass is. Its going to take at least 3 season to get back to championship contention as millsap loses his legs with age his height will become more of a problem.

I'd take any of those guys except Gay because he is over paid and something like 19 million.

why not trade Pierce for Al Jefferson and Allen for Josh Smith..

It would still leave us around 10-12 million in cap space and we could sign a couple of pieces

Kaman (5 million FA)
Al Jefferson
Josh smith
Pietrus
rondo

Bench Jeff Green (5 million), Bass, and fillers

Rondo Green, and Smith would create one of the best Fast Breaks in the league.  Rondo needs to be surrounded by guys who can run with him..

FA isn't the answer.

The only trade listed I would do in is Gay for Pierce, but I doubt MEM takes that trade (what exactly would they gain from it?).  Rudy is the only player on that list that has potential to be a core piece.  The other guys will just lead to years of mediocrity.  I woud argue that Pierce may be our most valuable trade chip; more so than Rondo.  You never hear about teams calling for Rondo (it's always us offering), but they called for Pierce.

Bass is likely to opt out of his player option at just $4 and Millsap is a better player. So I'd view him as our PF going forward.

I'd definitely want a pick or Kanter over Millsap.

I can't say I see any of those five trades as likely.

1. Hawks won't do that with Horford's injury leaving them without a PF.
2. Memphis will just hold onto Gay
3. Pacers might do that, I wouldn't be all that excited though Granger's game has stagnanted as a one dimensional scorer and he's highly paid. I'd rather get a prospect or a pick
4. I think Utah wouldn't pay that much for Pierce but it'd be a good deal.
5. Could happen, I don't want Hill though.

#1 I don't think Atlanta does.  Pierce duplicates Johnson, and actually has a worse contract than Smith.
#2 I don't think Memphis bites...and I am not sure it is worthwhile for the C's either.
#3 Why would Indy do that?  Granger gives you most of what Pierce does, but he has younger legs to do it more consistently.
#4 I like this one, but I doubt Utah would include an extra pick with either of those guys.
#5 Houston would do it, but I think it hurts the C's more than it helps.  Martin is a worse player than Pierce, and is injury prone, Hill has been a huge disappointment, and Patterson is undersized and hasn't produced.

I don't like the idea but Gay or Granger might have to consider, other than that forget about it. Kevin Martin? No thanks

And there you go. There's the proof.

Writers on ESPN can't come up with trade ideas that are any better or more realistic or more likely to happen than trade ideas that regular people on a sports blog can come up with.

Can we please end the Jeff Green nonsense already?
