Globe says 1 percent chance of Howard coming to C's

Chicago could be an interesting fit, if they can't get past Miami this year.  They could send back Noah, since he wouldn't be needed, and they'v got some good young players that Orlando might be interested in receiving back as well.  They'd be an immediate contender.  Rose fits the criteria of "another top-10 player."  Lots of good pieces around him, and a great coach.  He'd be in a big market.  Cold, but a max contract will buy a lot of sweaters.

Not that it has anything to do with the chances of landing Howard, but what do you think the odds were of the Celts getting both KG & Ray Allen?  Much worse than they were of landing the top pick that year anyhow.

This is a good point.  In some ways KG was like a free agent acquisition.  We initially had the assets to land him, but he didn't want to come.  So we landed Ray Allen and he changed his mind.

Adding another star to the roster could drastically improve our appeal to Howard (likely the thinking behind the Chris Paul trade).

Losing Jeff Green certainly doesn't help our cause in that quest, as we now lack an additional prospect to pair with Rondo.  It also doesn't help that two of the teams that might be looking to shop their stars (LA with Pau, NJ with Deron Williams) are well ahead of us in the Dwight sweepstakes.

If you put Howard and Rondo together you instantly become relevant. You add in Pierce, Bass, Pietrus, Bradley, Moore, JJJ, two draft picks and some cap money to sign a couple good free agents at PF and Off guard and you're in serious contention.

I also think that if, by some very slight chance, Howard comes to Boston, the combo of he and Rondo will make Boston a free agent magnet, much like the big three did.

Guys will be lining up to play with Howard, Pierce and Rondo, Howard has to know this.

LA, Dallas and NJ are the teams on Howard's wish list correct?

I don't understand that list.  If he wants to play with a consensus top 10 player (Kobe, Dirk, Deron Williams) why not expand the list to include Chicago and OKC? Why not those teams again if he wants to join a long-term contender?

If he wants a major metropolitan market why Dallas instead of Chicago?  If he wants to be the man in a major market why join the biggest ball & media hog in the business in Kobe?

If he wants a proven management/ownership group why NJ?

The wish list is something created by the media.  It is a combination of places that he could go to next year via free agency, and places that could trade for him and he would resign with.

Don't read too much into it. 

All those teams are the most likely teams he ends up on next year, however, there are other places, such as Chicago or OKC that would also be added to the list, if they were able to put together a suitable trade offer (and if they were inclined to).

The bottom line though, is that the C's only chance of convincing Howard to come to Boston is if they have another top 5-10 player in his prime to lure him.  They don't have that, so they are not on the list.

I think the majority of even the most ardent Rondo supporters would agree that he's not a top 5-10 player at this point, though some would argue that he has the potential to be at that level eventually.

Either way, between the failed attempt at trading for Chris Paul and the recent GM surveys, it's become apparent that the rest of the league has a much lower opinion of Rondo and his game than any of us ever suspected prior to this last off-season.

Rondo is a top 5 PG. Pierce will still be a top 7 SF next year. Ray will be a top 10 SG. Green, Bass, JJJ, Avery, draft picks. Maybe even Steamcleaner can return.

Celtics' system fits Dwight. We spread the floor well and Doc loves going inside. Other than Rondo and the rookies, all of our players have a proven jumpshot. PnR with Rondo and Dwight will be DEADLY.

People keep discounting Ray coming back. He's not moving his family and he doesn't care about money. He will stay here for any money the Celtics can afford without sacrificing their ability to retool. Ray is perfect with Dwight.

Any team with more assets would need to give them up in a sign-and-trade to fit Dwight into their cap.

Dallas, Phoenix, and New Jersey will have the cap space but not even half the assets the Celtics will.
