Magic May Allow Howard To Leave In Free Agency

The Magic have become more brazen in their belief they should roll the dice, allowing Dwight Howard to become a free agent this summer, where he can choose to leave -- at a very significant reduction in guaranteed money.

"He can still walk," Magic general manager Otis Smith said Friday afternoon. "But with a $30 million haircut."

To stay in Orlando, under terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, Howard can sign a five-year deal worth $110 million. To play anywhere else – unless he is traded there first – it will be four years and $80.5 million.

This really improves our chances to at least discuss things with Dwight Howard.

Nets, Mavericks and Celtics will be the frontrunners in that order. Rockets are outsiders if they don't exercise team options on half of their team (unlikely) and also unlikely to turn those half good players to something great to attract Dwight to go there.

The Celtics are also-rans next summer if they are only playing .500 basketball this season.

They need to do more to convince Dwight Howard he's joining a team on the verge of a title.

I guess the Magic think they can make a deep playoff run this season.  Probably not, but looking at the field of playoff teams at the moment, they're probably 3rd best in the East. 

If they can make some moves to improve the supporting cast a bit, they could indeed be a surprise Eastern Conference Champion like they were in '09.  That might convince Dwight to stay.


If they are indeed in win-now mode, maybe we can convince Orlando to take a gamble with us and give us a future 1st (2013 or 2014) if we trade them one of the Big 3.

I had a feeling Orlando Magic won't trade Dwight Howard. First of all, they won't get an equal value for the undisputed best Center in NBA going on half of decade. Secondly, $30 million We type of idiot would leave $30 million on the table and walk away. Orlando Magic hold trump card here. At the end of the day, I think Dwight Howard signs extension and stays in Orlando.

We'd have room to sign both Derron Williams and Dwight Howard along with other pieces.

We'd have two top 10 picks in the draft, I like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jared Sullinger for his scoring.

I think the keys to getting howard to sign would be having rondo as the pg and doc.

Howard stays in Orlando rest of season, he leaves and goes to the Mavs probally. Lakers then are second place. I could live with this, beats him going to LA.   

DA 's only chance is to land some players so good not even DH could pass it up.  We have to dump the three big contracts at a min. to even get a shot at this type of talent.  

Basically Boston needs a windfall or "miracle" to regain its power status in the short term of 1 year.

Something good has to fall our way by accident.  Doesn't seem like we can BUY our way back into shape.

I like the idea of Orlando rolling the dice. Stay strong and make a statement to the player saying "you dont run this team, the GM does". Orlando has a good record this year and I think they should look to add a couple pieces to the team and keep trying to entice Howard to stay. They could be a deep play off team by adding one or two other players.

Howard would be silly to walk and leave 30 mil on the table... Especially on a team that like someone said is probably 3rd best in the East. However if he does leave, I dont think we even have a shot at a discussion. I still stand by my prediction and say that we're gonna see Howard and Williams both in mavs jerseys next to Nowitzki next year.

If Howard does not want to become a Celtic, Ainge can still improve the team by effectively renting out cap space to facilitate a sign-and-trade that sends Howard to a capped out team.  That won't please people who want a contender next season, but a multi-year rebuilding plan may be the way to go.

Gives us 34-38 mil in cap space. 

Enough to take on Dwight's 20 mil salary AND have 14-18 mil to dangle at Deron Williams.

Trade Rondo to the highest bidder.

if he gets traded it means the team trading for him will only trade him if he signs an extension.

If he survives to FA, we can talk to him, 1% is better than nothing...
