The Timberwolves plan to offer Kevin Love a $60 million, four-year contract extension within the next eight days.

Love, 23, who is playing for $4.6 million this season, can become a restricted free agent after the season unless he signs an extension before Jan. 25. If he opts for free agency, the Wolves would have the right to match any outside offer. Love also can return to Minnesota in 2012-13 for $6.1 million and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Wolves President David Kahn isn't commenting on contract talks, and Love says he's unaware of the status of negotiations. The Wolves, though, want to get Love signed by next week.

If Love takes a qualifying offer and becomes a UFA in 2013, could the c's offer him a bigger contract than 15 mil a year for 4 years?

I don't think the C's could offer more (at least not significantly).  And if they are willing to offer $60 million right now, they almost certainly will match whatever the C's could offer.

Agreed.

His current team can offer him the most money.

  • Rondo = Good
The C's could and would offer the max; however, so will other teams AND the Wolves would match if they do (and they can offer an additional year).

The fact that the Wolves would only offer him $60 million now doesn't mean they won't be willing to match a larger offer in the future if this doesn't work. They have full control of the situation either way.

Exactly.  A deal right now would be a team discount, in exchange for the security of being set for life, in case he gets injured between now, and when he hits free agency.

If nothing else the celtics should up the offer to show they are serious about going after top notch free agents AND make the twolves pay more to match
(he's worth it)

I actually think Love controls everything in these negotiations. He could simply HATE Minnesota and the T'Wolves front office and be looking to get out of there.

So he could just take the QO, and wait a year to go into UFA. Then, he can sign with whomever he wants and he will still get the max money available because the team that signs him will do a sign and trade with Minnesota where Minnesota gets a trade exception and a couple of 1st round picks.

If Love is patient and is not looking at this year as his free agency year, he holds all the trump cards.

If he is patient and willing to risk a big injury then yes he does hold all the cards in the negotiations.

He's already on a bad basketball team, its not like some RFA situations (like Rondo's) where if the team's performance falters he's likely to get less money.

Injury risk is the big question: what sort of tolerance does Love have for it? Well that and does he want to stay in Minnesota or is he looking for the door.

I'm not sure these guys look at the injury risk half so much as it would be a year he should have been making X and instead is now making Y. They all think they are supermen and basketball is their life so playing basketball isn't a physical risk.

I think, like you said, it all comes down as to how much he really wants to stay in Minnesota. If he doesn't want to be there, he will wait. If he doesn't care and is looking to max out the money he will play the market this year.

Looking at it this way, any of the sides may refuse to sign anything, so they both have full control. But Love assumes all the risk if he doesn't sign. All it takes is one blow to that surgically repaired knee.

It sounds like K-Love enjoys playing in Minnesota + they are finally starting to put some talent around him + have signed a top notch coach in Rick Adelman.

No question in my mind that K-Love will sign a contract extension there. A max contract.

Personally I wouldnt go much more than that but I bet the Wolves end up going higher... 25 and 14 a night is well deserving of a 4 year 60 mil extension.
