And if Ainge had taken Brooks, then what? He's getting about 28 minutes a night in NJ. Would Doc play him that much here? Hell, no. Brooks is also averaging over 11 shots a game? Would he be getting even half as many attempts here? Again, not a chance. And does Brooks play any defense at all? Who knows?
Mike
Well he wouldn't get 28 mpg. But don't you think he's better than Avery Bradley and/or Marquis Daniels? He's certainly blowing them off the map in terms of PER. If they can get minutes under Doc, then so would Brooks. And he happens to be highly skilled in the one thing we're lacking the most - offense and scoring.
PER is fine and all, but if Doc tells Bradley that his job is to get the ball to a scorer, that's not going to show up in PER, unless it's an assist. Basketball stats are hard, even PER, because it's such a team game except for a few of those special, individual players. How do you calculate a guy who's job it is to set screens, or harasses the point guard into wasting most of the shot clock? Nor does it notice if a player misses a defensive switch and allows someone to take a wide open shot. I'm not saying PER isn't something to look at, but don't say "Brooks has a great PER for 12 games on a crap team" and equate that to "OMG, Brooks is the next Kobe, how did we miss him??" Is PER better than PPG? Sure. It helps separate efficient scorers from volume scorers, and players who rack up a lot of assists from players who rack up assists and turnovers, and so on. But all those other things that are important in basketball, like participating in an offense and a defense? Those are skills. Some players are just better at it than others, and PER can't catch that, nor is it attempting to try.
At draft time, the book on Brooks was good scorer, not much else. The book on JJJ was good shooter and defender, great athlete, might need to bulk up a little. I don't see how those books have changed much in the past month.
I suppose you can debate if Brooks would have made the Celtics better this year, but given that he hasn't pushed the Nets over the top in any games, I'm not sure how you can make the argument that he would have pushed the Celtics over the top with considerably less playing time.
