after this year we are going to have alot of Cap space to go after free agents/trades(maybe use exceptions?) now, I think D.howard is a longshot, but theres still alot of quality players we could go out and get IMO besides using the draft

Leandro barbosa-Unrestricted fa 2012, think he would be a target of dannys.

OJ mayo- Restricted FA in 2012..but I expect the grizzlies not to match what any team gives him. and has expressed interest in playing with Rondo

Josh smith- atlanta wants to get rid of him. add in the fact he's friends with Rondo makes him a viable target to come to boston. not to mention, in HS he/rondo looked beastly together

Jeff Green- sounds like he wants to stay in boston, never really got a chance here. I still think danny feels he can develop into a good player. plus I dont see many teams interest after the heart surgery

obviously none of these guys are bonafied "superstars" but danny could put together a solid team of talent and hope that under Doc Rivers system they can grow/improve..build a team like the Grizzlies...

I dont think Danny has any intention to "suck" for picks...but more try to reload on the fly and if need be trade guys for impact players...theres no guarantee you are going to "luck" yourself into a durant/kobe type player by just sucking...look at Detroit/washington etc.

Detroit killed itself by over spending for mediocre Free Agents Charlies Villanueva and Ben Gordon.

Now take a look again at who is available after Howard and Deron Williams.  Not appealing for what they are likely to get paid.

Ainge is probably going to have to trade his way into a franchise changing player rather then signing one IMO.  Just like he has done in the past.

If were going to suck, it needs to be now. Having a high pick in this draft would be HUGE. I'm not saying bomb for Andre Drummond or Anthony Davis, but there are franchise changing players in this draft. As of now we're tied for the 10th pick in the draft. It wouldn't be a bad idea to trade for picks, then flip those picks on draft day for someone like Josh Smith or OJ Mayo. We're not going to get anywhere with the 15th pick and a first round exit to Miami because we're the 8th seed.

I think this question highlights why we can't blow this team up. There are only really three or four interesting FAs out there: DH, DWill, Love (restricted), JSmith (not super interested in him however).

There is no clear cut path to a contending team next season with an overhaul. That's why I think our best chance to be good is to work with our admittedly aging core.

sign Anthony Randolph to a cheap long term deal, 4 years/12 mil.

Batum seems unhappy and Denver probably doesn't keep all of it's wings so I'd try to pick one of them up

Play out the season with Pierce the only big 3 member left, enter the lottery (shabazz  ;D) amnesty pierce and then go hard in FA. 2013 is stacked with guys like CP3, Curry, Jennings,Jameer,  Monta, Iggy, Tyreke, K-Mart, Harden, Manu, Lou Will, S Jax, R Brewer, Gordon, Smoove, Marion, Wright, Gerald Wallace, Metta Peace, Ariza, Ibaka, Millsap, Brand,  Al Jeff, Blair, Taj, Okafor and Odom plus some players that could accept the QO this year and opt for 2013 FA (Love if he wants out, Brook cause of the foot, etc)

Draft has some good late lotto picks. I like Beal Sullinger, and Leonard a lot more than the guys ahead of them at their position (Lamb, Davis, Drummond) If we can snag up one of them or even Rivers we have found ourselves a keeper

Omer Asik would be an interesting target to fill our hole at center. He is a liability offensively, but could be one of the best defensive centers in the league. On a per 36 minute basis, he is getting around 11 rebounds, 2+ blocks, and 1+ steals. Probably not gonna come cheap since he is a 7 footer and restricted, but the Bulls might not go too high with the money they have committed to Rose/Deng/Boozer/Noah.

I hope Danny doesnt go out and spend the money just for the sake of spending the money. Like someone pointed out when the Pistons blew it signing Charlie and Gordon... If we cant net a big fish, throw some money to some good role guys that can fill out the team and then save some dough to try and make a splash in 2013.

CV and Ben Gordon weren't the bad signings for Detroit (though CV isn't a player worth having).  The problem was not having a role for BG on the team.  BG might have been a decent signing as RIP's replacement, but then they resigned Rip to that horrible, horrible deal and created a logjam of overpaid players with egos.  Then Prince had injury issues...

That was a team (like this one) that was so assured of their own ability, even after that ability faded, that they wouldn't listen to coaching any more.  Their core needed to be broken up because they listened to each other more than their coach (Rip, Tayshaun).

But in retrospect, the BG signing wasn't that bad, it was keeping their core after their past-due date without changing their roles.

Sort of like us this year.

But yes, I do like Mayo, and think a Rondo/Mayo/JG attack can be pretty good, especially if Pierce stays on as 6th man.  IF we can get a PF that can run and finish, too (Hi, Josh Smith) we're going to be fun to watch.

ya, I like the idea of a lineup of Rondo/Mayo/Green....plus, Mayo/Green are young with room to grow and might flourish with a change of scenery

mayo was looking like he could be an elite SG before the Grizzlies started to move away from him

Barbosa BARELY has a higher efficiency rating than Steamer (6.67).

Barbosa is far from a "mediocre" talent.  He is rather below average.
