This isn't an overreaction post.  I'm not going to sit here and tell you KG, Pierce and Ray are done.  All three are past their prime (they were past their prime in 08), but all of them have a some basketball left.  We will win some games this year and we will lose some games.  That's not my point.  My point is... from a fan perspective this is the most boring type of team to have.  Let me explain.

I came to terms with us no longer being contenders sometime last year when I realized Shaq was never coming back.  A lot of you might still be grasping at some irrational hope, but for all intents and purposes, this team is no longer relevant.  Our depth is a joke.  Spin it how you want... Pietrus, Daniels, JO, Wilcox, Bradley... that's garbage.  I randomly look at a borderline contender like Dallas, take a look at their bench with Jason Terry, Vince Carter, Lamar Odom... and realize any one of those guys would probably instantly be 6th man on this pathetic Celtic bench. The fact that Stiemsma made this roster isn't a sign of his talent... it's a sign of how depleted our laughable bench has become.

So there's that.  This team in our wildest dreams is a 3rd seed... but baring some miracle, they will be eliminated early in the playoffs.  I've seen what they are capable of.  We haven't improved.  There are no new tricks up this team's sleeves... and frankly, I'm bored to death by them.  I religiously watch the Celtics in previous years, but I've barely paid attention the last few games.  I keep it on as background noise while I surf the net.  This a tired act taking it's final bow.

Part of the problem is that we are sitting ducks.  It's unlikely we can get anything of value for KG and Ray's expiring contracts.  Danny's best option is probably to just see this season through, see what the options are in the offseason.  I can't speak to our chances of actually landing a top tier free agent, but I know that there will be options.  And if we DO re-sign Ray/KG, it will likely be to smaller contracts so we can afford to sign some legitimate help (a Chris Kaman or something).  It's pretty clear that this team WILL look different next year, though.  So... we sit here and wait.

Here's the other thing.  There are really only two types of teams that are interesting to follow.  #1 - a contender/a great team (2008) or... #2 - a young team with hope (2007).  In 2007, I was interested, because we had young guys like Big Al.  It was fun to watch his growth.  It was fun to see him averaging 16 and 11 and wondering what the future would hold.  Rondo was an intriguing young guy.  Gerald Green even seemed to be interesting to watch.  You tune in, because you want to see if this is the day they "get it".  Last year even though I had come to terms with us no longer being a contender, it was still interesting to see what Jeff Green might do.  I tuned in, because I wanted to see if he'd "get it" and start averaging 20 points.

This year... we got nothing.  Stiesma doesn't count (he'll be out of the league in a couple years).  Avery Bradley is garbage.  Rondo is fun to watch, but he's reached his peak... I use to watch him to see if he'd transform into a superstar, but he's reached his ceiling as an allstar and I've come to terms with it.  The rest of the team has nothing new to show me.  I'm bored.  Very bored.  There are no "must-watch" possessions.  I barely even care enough to check the box scores.  I don't really have a reason to watch until the playoffs and I know the playoffs will be short.

I'll give you a random example... despite the fact it would make our team less of a contender, if the Celtics went out and traded Rondo for Stephen Curry + cap filler, at the very least I'd be tuning in to watch what Curry (and his godlike shooting potential) could do in Boston.  That's a storyline.  This team is devoid of storylines right now.

I'd be on board with "blowing it up", but I know that our best move is just to wait until the offseason.  So...  I'll half-heartedly follow this sitting duck team until much-needed change finally comes this summer.  This is the worst type of team to follow.

That's your problem, man. You lost faith. This team can still compete come playoff time when every possession counts. They are still a contender and a top team in the east. Which top seeded team will want to face the Celtics in playoffs? They’ll all be scrambling to avoid them. Remember the 1999 Knicks, that’s all I gotta say.

Also, the Warriors thought Curry might be enough to net Dwight Howard. That should be an indication of how high they are on him. ;)

Ok then yeah... I lost faith.  This isn't the team that won the title.  Only 4 of those players remain.  Three of those 4 are well past their prime and the rest of the squad is made up of Brandon Bass and a bucket full of scrubs.

I have no more "faith" in this team winning the title than I had in the Walker/Pierce Celtics winning the title.  Sure, there's ALWAYS a chance, but it's HIGHLY unlikely.  We don't have the talent.  Period.

I too much prefer watching contenders or young up-and-comers than aged non-contenders.  But I've a particular peeve against calling any players, professional or nonprofessional, or any humans, for that matter, 'garbage'.

I'm also not sure that Pietrus, for example, can't help a team more than Carter at this point.

I also think at this point Danny's best option will probably be just riding out the veteran contracts he has.  Pierce is likely to come around enough so that we suck it up for the last two yers of his contract too.

Bradley is still very young and I'm not sure that he won't develop into a real player.  Haven't given up on the rookies either.

I follow the C's no matter what their record.   So don't speak for me in this regard.

I'm on this forum... so clearly I'm following them too despite their irrelevance.  But it's a pretty boring team to watch at this point.  You know none of the young guys are going to turn into anything substantial and you know all the old guys are just getting older.  You know this team's depth is the weakest it has been during the KG era... and you know a younger, deeper Celtic team was crushed by the Heat last season.  We already know the outcome of this season... no surprises are in store.  I'll be cheering for them in the playoffs, but I can't remember a time I've been this bored and disinterested watching regular season Celtic games.

I'm "this" close to going into full-blown 2007 "tank for a top pick" mode with this bunch, but I realize we'll still probably end up with 3-8 seed and an early exit from the playoffs.

You're clearly not alone.  A lot of fans don't particularly like this team.  Personally, I'm not one of them.

I'm with you.  I can't disagree with anything you said, and I agree emphatically about what types of teams are interesting to watch.

This team used to play beautiful basketball, and it was a pure pleasure to watch them do it.  These days, they are just plain painful to watch.  It's depressing on a number of levels, but like you I came to terms with it a while ago, so I can't get too worked up about it.

Just as you said, though reasonably I know it doesn't make sense right now, I'm anxious to get the rebuild started so I can start to see what the next interesting iteration of this team will look like.  But I know that won't begin until this summer, and even this summer may not be that exciting due to the lack of any high draft picks and a weak free agent market outside of one or two big names that almost certainly aren't coming here.

I'm with Pos and the OP. I too came to grips with this prior to the season starting. The only surprise to me is they look even worse than I thought. I too am anticipating the. Rebuild, even though I know the pain that will involve.

I agree 100 percent with the OP. Simply put, this team has no swagger. I was watching the Memphis-New York game the other night and it was so refreshing to see a young Memphis team filled with promising young talent who were simply excited to compete.

For me there are lots of compelling storylines on this team.  They aren't necessarily the ones that the mass media considers to be sexy, but I'm very interested to see how they play out.

The OP's comment about Rondo is a farce...

He hasn't "reached his peak"...

No, he's playing with guys who do NOT want to run the floor with him.  Ray will do that, but the other starters won't.

Bass will... Wilcox will... Stiemsma will...  and the bench guys.

I'd suggest playing Pierce and KG next to Dooling for the rest of the season.  He's more of a half-court guy and PP and KG can just jog down the floor...

storylines:

are these guys done?  will garnett retire after this season?  will rajon rondo ever be able to hit free throws?  will the celtics make the playoffs?

etc.

there are storylines, they just aren't ones that i have much interest in following.
